Consistent with the existing literature, correctional officials in this study report that they use segregation to reduce the likelihood of women instigating an epidemic of self-harm (Cookson, 1977;Heney, 1990;Kilty, 2006;Ross et al., 1979). This approach fails to recognize two things: (a) that some women may become more agitated with a transfer to segregation fearing the greater restriction and isolation will increase their self-harming behavior and (b) that some women may want to be removed from the general population to a more conducive therapeutic environment rather than to segregation, which they view as punishment (Dell & Beauchamp, 2006;Kilty, 2006, p. 178). ...
