Journal of Humanistic Counseling

This paper introduces the innovative practice of Dynamic Aesthetic Emancipation. It aims to enhance trauma care by emphasizing how the transformative potential of integrated arts and nature-based modalities leads to emancipatory changes for individuals that surpass conventional care and counseling methods. The practice utilizes the aesthetic and experiential aspects of creative and natural modalities to bridge the gap between personal healing and social dynamics. We highlight the necessity of approaches that empower clients to actively engage with art and nature, thereby challenging conventional therapeutic roles.

Fathers' transformative caring experiences of engaging in music and singing with their children

This study explores the role of music and singing in fostering transformative caring relationships between fathers and their children. It aims to understand how these interactions contribute to fatherhood identity and relational dynamics, filling a significant gap in research on musical fatherhood. Employing a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach, the study conducted open-ended interviews with eight fathers, analysing data through the lens of Paul Ricoeur's theory of interpretation. Findings reveal that musical activities enable fathers to engage intuitively and responsively with their children, facilitating a pre-verbal form of communication that deepens emotional bonds and enhances paternal identity. Music and singing emerge as powerful tools that transcend traditional parenting roles, allowing fathers to experience and express a potentiated sense of fatherhood marked by empathy, connection and care. This study highlights the profound impact of musical engagement on father-child relationships and suggests broader implications for emotional intelligence and gender roles in parenting.

Situeret psykopatologi

What are Mental Disorders? Exploring the Role of Culture in the Harmful Dysfunction Approach

A shared problem in psychology, psychiatry, and philosophy is how to define mental disorders. Various theories have been proposed, ranging from naturalism to social constructionism. In this article, I first briefly introduce the current landscape of such theories, before concentrating on one of the most influential approaches today: The harmful dysfunction theory developed by Jerome Wakefield. It claims that mental disorders are hybrid phenomena since they have a natural basis in dysfunctional mental mechanisms, but also a cultural component in the harm experienced by human beings. Although the theory is well thought through, I will raise a critical question: Is it possible to isolate mental mechanisms as naturally evolved from cultural factors? I will argue that it is not, but that the theory could still be helpful in an understanding of mental disorders, albeit on a new footing that does not operate with a natural and a cultural component as two separate factors. I argue that we need to develop a “naturecultural” approach to psychopathology that avoids mentalism, based on the fact that human beings are irreducibly persons.

Why does the pathologization of grief cause such a stir? A comment on Bergsmark and Ramsing

After years of debate, a new diagnosis called prolonged grief disorder (PGD) was finally included in the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases ( ICD-11; World Health Organization). The pathologization of grief has been controversial and caused quite a stir among researchers, practitioners, and the general public. Recently, Bergsmark and Ramsing (2023) have addressed some considerations that they believe are lost in the ensuing debate, and they call for a positive response to the diagnosis among psychologists. In this reply, I argue that we have good reasons to maintain a critical stance both toward the specific grief diagnosis and toward the general pathologization of human suffering.

... The second example has to do with humanism and its political implications in research. Brinkmann's (2024) piece ends with the assumption that only a framework that incorporates personhood can lead to a social justice perspective. As he puts it "[p]osthumanism is a significant correction to the ontology of a fixed and static humanism, but if we want to advocate human rights, for example, we need a notion of personhood as constituted by powers and vulnerabilities" (p. ...

... They can then hardly be considered to have a 'disorder' and neurodiversity can be closer to a 'superpower'. Brinkmann (2024) makes the salient point that 'a person can only be said to be mentally ill or disordered if that person experiences suffering or distress to a considerable extent', which cannot be said for many people who are neurodiverse and lead happy and successful lives. ...

... Emotional suffering is a normal and healthy part of life, yet it is often mislabeled as a mental illness (Samuel et al., 2024). This mislabeled suffering, known as pathologization, is often assumed to require treatment from a mental health professional, ignoring social or political factors (Brinkmann, 2023;Fergusson et al., 2023). This overmedicalization has significant implications, particularly for individuals in communities facing poverty, where the pathologization of emotional suffering can create social pressures for inappropriate and unnecessary treatment in contexts under which where access to any form of appropriate mental health care is already limited. ...

... In a recent article, Brinkmann et al. (2023) draw on Ingold's work to critically examine the prevailing biologizing trends in conceptions of mental health, arguing for an alternative, non-reductive biologization grounded in ecological and contextual understandings. They emphasise the importance of considering human beings within their environmental niches and social contexts rather than viewing mental health issues primarily through neurobiology and genetics focused narrowly on the individual. ...

... Hallam (2010) highlights in his work that participants in group music-making (orchestras, choirs) are characterised by a sense of belonging, a sense of co-creation and discipline based on a shared set of norms, respect and trust (Smith, 2004;Hallam, 2010). Damsgaard and Brinkmann (2022) investigated the impact of music, in the form of singing in a choir, on social relationships and mental health. Participation in choir singing induces a conscious presence, which leads to awareness of relationships and solidarity. ...
