JOURNAL OF Qualitative Health Research & Case Studies Reports

Background: Increased blood sugar levels due to impaired glucose absorption due to insulin deficiency or reduced cell sensitivity to glucose absorption are the main symptoms in DM patients. The fluctuating increase and decrease in blood sugar depends on several factors, one of which is food consumption. Various efforts are made to reduce blood sugar levels, such as adjusting diet, exercising, doing physical activity, consuming anti-DM drugs, and controlling blood sugar regularly. Diet management is done by reducing the amount of sweet foods, carbohydrates, or foods high in glucose. Apart from that, consuming food or herbal medicines such as consuming green tea and consuming black onions (Garlic) can reduce the blood sugar levels of DM patients. Purpose: To determine the effectiveness of giving green tea and black garlic in reducing blood sugar levels in DM patients. Method: This research was a Quasi-experimental with a control group which was carried out on two groups, namely model A group which was given green tea and model B group which was given black onions regularly for 1 month. Participants in this study were DM patients in the working area of the Panyileukan Community Health Center who were actively prolanist. The intervention of giving green tea was carried out twice a day in the morning and evening, while the intervention was giving 2 cloves of black onion twice a day for 1 month. Data analysis using SPSS with Paired T-Test. Results: The average blood sugar level in model A group before giving green tea was 125.7 mg/dl and in model B group given black onion (Garlic) was 155.1 mg/dl. After being given the intervention, blood sugar levels decreased, in model A group the average blood sugar level was 118.3 mg/dl and in model B group it was 131.4 mg/dl. Based on the results of the analysis carried out on the two groups, it was found that blood sugar levels decreased. The average reduction in model A group was 7.4 mg/dl and in model B group was 23.7. Conclusion: Giving green tea and black garlic can reduce blood sugar levels in DM patients. However, of the two interventions, giving black garlic was more effective in reducing blood sugar levels in DM patients than giving green tea. Suggestion: DM sufferers are advised to consume black garlic as an additional alternative to lower blood sugar levels. Keywords: Black Garlic; Blood Sugar Levels; Green Tea.
