The rise of virtual influencers (VIs) in digital marketing channels, such as social media platforms and the metaverse, raises critical, under-researched questions about blame attribution to these digital entities and its subsequent impact on brand trust. Our research addresses this gap by applying the theoretical lens of mind perception to two studies using an experimental causal chain design approach. Study 1 revealed that consumers attribute higher mind perception to a human VI and consequently place more blame on them in negative scenarios compared to AI-powered VI. Additionally, we found that perceived mind perception was unaffected by the digital channel (social media versus metaverse). Study 2 demonstrated that brand trust diminishes more significantly when an AI-powered VI is blamed compared to a human VI. These insights contribute to understanding the psychological mechanism of blame judgement towards VIs, and highlight the importance for brands to consider the repercussions of using AI-powered VI.

Circular Economy (CE) adoption in Indian SMEs is still nascent, irrespective of various initiatives, policies, and trans-national strategic partnerships of the Indian government. The existing research has outlined the benefits of CE adoption within organisations (regardless of the size and sector) to achieve sustainable business performance in emerging markets. This paper employs resource-based view as a theoretical lens to examine the factors influencing and inhibiting CE adoption in Indian manufacturing and process-based SMEs by conducting twelve case-studies. The within and cross-case analysis shows that lack of business process analysis, skills and expertise, digital transformation and multi-stakeholder cooperation within the supply chain inhibits CE adoption, while government initiatives, competitive advantage, environmental regulation, and customer pressure are the drivers. The study proposes a CE implementation guide comprising six principles for the SMEs’ managers in India to achieve resource efficiency, cost savings, multi-stakeholder collaboration and sustainable outcomes across the CE fields of action.

Internal organisational factors have been identified as barriers to adopt circular economy (CE) practices in prior research. However, empirical evidence is limited to support this claim. Additionally, their impact on sustainable business performance, especially for the emerging economies and within the small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) have not been studied adequately. This research bridges these knowledge gaps drawing on from CE, human resource management, innovation and sustainability literature to develop and validate a theoretical model that examines the relationships between organisational factors (leadership, innovation, culture, and skills) and their impact on adopting CE practices to enhance sustainable performance of SMEs. A survey was conducted among 205 SMEs’ employees in Vietnam, and responses were analysed using employing Structural Equation Modelling. Our findings reveal that organisational leadership will facilitate developing the culture and innovation capability to adopt CE practices through a ‘hub and spoke’ strategy for enhancing sustainable performance among the SMEs in Vietnam. In this vein, we recommend creating knowledge sharing strategies, collaborative and cooperative CE working groups within and between SMEs, and information systems capabilities to build sustainable business organisations.
