This article analyses social character traits of the Malays nurtured into their psyche and manifested in their behaviours, manner of speeches, values and norms, thoughts and knowledge. Based on traditional Malay sayings, poems, proverbs and verses, Hashim Hj. Musa (2008) was able to establish 26 core Malay psyches or social character traits. Those who were able to adopt these traits were considered to have high moral and ethical values and were highly respected by the Malay society. They were regarded as the gentiles and has acquired three noble traits, namely, (1) good-natured, well-mannered and urbane, (2) polite, sensible and insightful in speech, and (3) wise and knowledgable. In oder to discover the condition of the Malays today, a study was carried out to determine the degrees of conformity or divergence from these 26 core social character traits. Findings showed that the Malays still retain their religious, ethical and moral values, and basic knowledge, but are weak in upbringing and nurturing traits resulting in negative and defective social behaviour and inablity to put into practice what they know. This is the main factor that gives rise to social ills and decadence in the Malay society of the past and present. Thus efforts and striving to nuture, instil and redevelop those 26 core social character traits among the Malays of today, is of paramount importance to rekindle and regenerate their inner qualities and strength in order to achieve the qualities of of par excellence.
