Herpes simplex viruses (HSVs) are common human DNA viral infections, produced by two subtypes: HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 is mainly associated with oral disorders, while HSV-2 causes vaginal infections. In the United States, about one-quarter of the population is infected with HSV-2, and sexual behavior has been linked to virus acquisition. Diagnosis involves serology, viral culture, or polymerase chain reaction. Treatments include acyclovir, valacyclovir, and famciclovir, with dosages and regimens varying depending on the clinical situation. Herpes is known as Namla in the unani medical system, meaning ant, and is caused by Safrā' (yellow bile) with the sensation of ant biting, itching, and burning. This review of literature aims to highlight the unani perspective on the disease, outlining its etiopathology, characteristics, and various treatments mentioned by ancient unani physicians.
