Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the backbone of Sri Lankan agriculture with the accomplishment of the daily nutritional requirements of humans. This study is intended to explore the cultivation seasonal variation on minerals in selected rice varieties and to examine the possible health risks due to toxic heavy metal contamination. Twenty-six different rice varieties cultivated during Maha (2018/2019-from September to March) and Yala (2019-from May to end of August) seasons were analyzed for selected twenty elements using intra-laboratory validated test methodologies combined with ICP-MS and UV–vis spectrophotometry to determine possible variations of these parameters due to cultivation seasonal differences. The concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, and Se of all analyzed rice varieties were lower than the maximum levels stipulated by FAO/WHO guidelines suggesting them to be suitable for human consumption. The present study revealed that selected rice varieties in Sri Lanka to be a potential source of valuable minerals such as, Fe, Zn, K, Ca, Mg, Na, P and the cultivation seasonal variation has a significant positive impact on the mineral profile of rice. Moreover, ANOVA, PCA, and PLS analysis confirmed that there was a distinct variation of the profile for minerals and heavy metals of analyzed rice varieties.

... The increasing demand for quantifying compounds responsible for the bioactive potential and antioxidant capacity of foods and beverages has driven the search for suitable analytical methods for simultaneously determining different classes of phenolic compounds (Granato et al., 2018;). The phenolic compounds are mainly determined using highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC), employing UV/Vis detectors by diode array (DAD), fluorescence detection (FD) and mass spectrometers (MS) (; Padilha et al., 2017;Nicácio et al., 2021;Urbstaite et al., 2022;Karunarathna et al., 2023). In HPLC, the quality of the separation of compounds is a key factor in analytical reliability, and it depends on different factors, including the column type (Mizzi et al., 2020;USP, 2022). ...

... For instance, since the cultivation areas were close, all the tested varieties shared the same soil traits and differed only in the climatic conditions among the harvests. According to the literature, in similar environments, the micronutrient concentration of a given genotype remains constant, and therefore the analysed data could differ due to the inherent genotypes of the traditional rice varieties tested (H€ ansch & Mendel, 2009;Sebastian & Prasad, 2015;Karunarathna et al., 2022;Perera et al., 2023). ...
