In the present article, the proposal of a new suballiance, Lavandulo lui-sieri-Cistenion albidi, is presented, constituted by chamaephytic and nanophanerophytic communities in eroded decarbonated soils derived from limestones (leptosols, chromic luvisols and cambisols) in the dry to lower hyperhumid, thermo-mesomediterranean biocli-matic levels. It is distributed throughout the western Iberian Peninsula in the Coastal Lusi-tan-Andalusian and Lusitan-Extremadurean biogeographical territories. It is positioned in the Ulici argentei-Cistion ladaniferi, Lavanduletalia stoechadis, Cisto-Lavanduletea. The new associations Anthyllido maurae-Ulicetum jussiaei, Sedo albi-Cistetum crispi and Thymetum congesti are also described. The multivariate analysis confirmed the segregation of this new suballiance, as well as the new associations.
This study proposes a bioclimatic characterization and a new biogeographic division for the Antarctic territories up to the province level following the criteria and models of Rivas-Martínez et al. The Antarctic Kingdom comprises the continent of Antarctica, the surrounding ice-covered Antarctic islands, and the associated cold oceanic islands and archipelagos. It has two biogeographic regions: the Antarctic Region and the Subantarctic Insular Region. The Antarctic Region includes the entire pergelid Antarctic continent and the surrounding islands and archipelagos, and is characterized by upper suprapolar hyperoceanic and oceanic or Polar pergelid bioclimates on the coasts. The region has been divided into three pr6ovinces: Maritime Antarctica, West Antarctica and East Antarctica. The Subantarctic Insular Region comprises the circumantarctic islands and archipelagos that are widespread at the southern tip of the planet’s most important oceans, mostly in the subtemperate latitudinal zone inside or not far from the Antarctic Convergence. Bioclimatically, all insular subantarctic territories (excluding the South-American Tierra de Fuego, Terra Magellanica and large islands) are characterized by thermo-suprapolar and semipolar antarctic hyperoceanic bioclimates on the coasts. Four provinces – Falklandian-South Georgian, Kerguelenian, Macquarian and Aucklandian-Campbellian – have been recognized in this region. All these units are characterized by floristic bioindicators.
Geobotanic and taxonomic comments of twenty relevant plant species growing wild in Morocco, mostly endemics, selected from our “Catalogus Flora of Morocco: significant species” (in progress), after a critical assessment of the main floristic works in the territory. Also we publish now the new “Geobotanic map of Northwestern Africa territo-ries”, utilize as general ubication of the plants and communities in our Moroccan published papers.
The Fogo Santiago Island is the one that reaches the highest altitude of the 10
islands of the Cabo Verde archipelago. Biogeographically is located in the Paleotropical
kingdom, Afrotropical sub-kingdom, Sahara-Tropical region, Cabo Verde Province, South Cabo
Verde sector, Fogo district. The bioclimate of this island varies between tropical desert euhyperoceanic
infratropical hyperarid (São Filipe) and topical pluviestacional eu-hyperoceanic
supra-tropical sub-humid (above 2500 m).
he island of Santiago is the largest of the 10 islands of the Cape Verde. It is
located in the Paleotropical kingdom, Afrotropical sub-kingdom, Saaro-Tropical region, Cape
Verde province, South Cape Verde sector, Santiago district. Bioclimate of Santiago varies from
tropical desertic eu-hyperoceanic infratropical desertic (in Praia) and tropical xeric
ultrahyperoceanic thermotropical dry (Serra da Malagueta Range). In the highest peak (Pico da
Antónia) it reaches mesotropical semiarid.
According to criteria and proposals of S. Rivas-Martínez, S. Rivas-Sáenz and A. Penas (Glob Geobot 1(1):1–634, 2011a) with which they established a world bioclimatic classification system, two macrobioclimates (Temperate and Mediterranean), eight bioclimates (temperate hyperoceanic, temperate oceanic, temperate xeric, mediterranean pluviseasonal-oceanic, mediterranean pluviseasonal-continental, mediterranean xeric-oceanic and mediterranean desertic-oceanic), two bioclimatic variants (steppic and submediterranean), 11 thermotypes (thermotemperate, mesotemperate, supratemperate, orotemperate, cryorotemperate, inframediterraean, thermomediterranean, mesomediterranean, supramediterranean, oromediterranean and cryoromediterraean) and seven ombrotypes (arid, semiarid, dry, subhumid, humid, hyperhumid and ultrahyperhumid) are recognized in the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands. In addition to this, six types of continentality (euhyperoceanic, subhyperoceanic, semihyperoceanic, euoceanic, semicontinental and subcontinental) are also recognized. Furthermore, relationships between potential natural vegetation (sigmeta, geosigmeta, permasigmata, minorisigmeta and geopermasigmeta) and the bioclimatic units existing in the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands are set.
The following biogeographic units for the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands have been established according to the conceptual geobotanical proposals of Rivas-Martínez et al. (Parte I. Itinera Geobotanica 17:5–436, 2007; Parte II. Itinera Geobotanica 18 (1):5–424, 2011a; Glob Geobot 1(1):1–634, 2011b; Int J Geobot Res 1(1):21–40, 2011c and Int J Geobot Res 4(1):1–64, 2014): one kingdom (Holartic), two regions (Eurosiberian, Mediterranean), eight provinces, 16 subprovinces, 49 sectors and 264 districts. The potential natural vegetation: climatophilous, climato-temporihygrophilous, xerophilous, hygrophilous sigmetum or geopermasigmetum (series and geopermaseries) are shown for each province and sector. We also point out some of their specific features. Biogeographic maps up to district level are shown.
... Juniperus badia (H. Gay) Rivas Mart., Molero Mesa, Marfil & G. Benítez is a drought-tolerant species (Willson et al., 2008;Jovellar et al., 2013) restricted to Spain, Portugal and north Africa on both acid and basic hard substrates (Amaral-Franco, 1986;Rivas-Martínez et al., 2020;Cano-Ortiz et al., 2021;Gutiérrez-Larruscain et al., 2024). The forest formations that this species structures in central Iberia have been considered permanent communities with a marked edaphoxerophilous character, which is imposed by the rocky substrate caused by soil loss (Sánchez-Mata, 1999;Cano et al., 2007Cano et al., , 2019 Cano et al. 2019(Sánchez-Mata, 1989, 1999Rivas-Martínez et al., 2011;Cano et al., 2019;López-Sáez, 2023); and, ii) the mesomediterranean formations of Montes de Toledo and Sierra de San Vicente mountain areas (Talavera district, Oretana Range and Tajo sector, Lusitania and Extremadura subprovince, West Iberian Mediterranean province), corresponding to the association Pistacio terebinthi-Juniperetum badiae Cano et al. 2007nom. ...
... As a basis for the diversity of the class Festucetea indigestae, the syntaxonomical proposal by Rivas-Martínez et al. (2001) and Rivas-Martínez (2002) was followed, which was adapted with subsequent corrections in nomenclature terms. This proposal has been extended with new associations: Armerio ciliatae-Festucetum summilusitanae (Teesdaliopsio-Luzulion caespitosae) (Pulgar & Izco 2007), Diantho langeani-Festucetum summilusitanae Monteiro-Henriques et al. in J.C. Costa et al. 2012 andMinuartio juressi-Festucetum summilusitanae (Meireles et al. in J.C. Costa et al. 2012), both of the alliance Hieracio castellani-Plantaginion radicatae and Festucetum actiophytae (Saginion merinoi) (Izco & Rivas-Martínez, 2018). The analysis did not include either the association Arenario querioidis-Sedetum brevifolii Honrado et al. in J.C. Costa et al. (2012), based on a single inventory and a poor floristic definition, or the alliance Festucion duriotaganae, proposed by Capelo et al. (1998). ...
... In Europe, the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands have been classified as "hotspots for climate change", as they are areas sensitive to its impacts [10]. The complex orography and the influence of various air and water masses generate a high climatic diversity in the Iberian Peninsula, giving rise to numerous plant communities, some of which are endemic [11,12]. For their part, the Balearic Islands, due to their insular nature and variety of microclimates, also possess great taxonomic and phylogenetic biodiversity, highlighting their mountainous regions [13,14]. ...
... On the other hand, seasonality effects on parasitoid communities have been poorly studied, and there is little information on the interaction of such factor with local or landscape parameters and its influence on community turnover (but see Alignier et al. 2014;de Paz et al. 2023ade Paz et al. , 2022Haas-Renninger et al. 2024;Möller et al. 2020). However, seasonality has been shown to be particularly important in Mediterranean studies, where ecosystems undergo dramatic changes over time and the availability of floral resources and hosts changes rapidly throughout the season (Rivas-Martínez et al. 2017;Rosas-Ramos et al. 2022;Stamou et al. 2004). ...
... According to phytosociological and symphytosociological models of vegetation succession, a secondary forest undergoes tree replacement and upward plant dynamics towards a climax stage within the vegetation series. This concept is supported by Cano-Ortiz et al. (2015) [13], Rivas-Martínez et al. (1999,2011) [14,15], Corlett (1994) [16], Chokkalingam and De Jong (2001) [17], and other researchers in the field. ...
... The ImageJ software (Rasband 1997(Rasband −2017 was used for measuring on SEM micrographs. Bioclimatic classification conforms to Rivas-Martínez (2005), and biogeographical data follow Rivas-Martínez (2007). For phylogenetic discussion, a preliminary condensed Maximum Likelihood (ML) tree (see below) was generated with MEGA X (v. ...
