Ways in which the textile industry is showing concern for the environment are discussed. Unusual natural fibres made from bamboo, wood pulp and maize and organic cotton are appearing. Product planning with the environment in mind would include such aspects as reducing pollution during production, energy consumption, and reuse and recycling of the finished product after use. Studies to use woad (Isatis tinctoria) as a fibre and dye plant (Legambiente e Comunita Montana Valtiverina) and a project devoted to replacing synthetic, fossil, toxic or polluting products with products derived from renewable raw materials are noted, e.g. the use of sunflower oil as a lubricant in the textile and tanning industries. The possible impact of the impending registration of chemicals (REACH) is noted.
