The studies herein reported were undertaken for the purpose of determining what changes, if any, were induced in the mother heart by pregnancy. Clinical observations were supplemented by electrocardiographic studies, in order to secure written evidence of any possible heart abnormalities which might not be detected by ordinary clinical methods. The opportunity to study the hearts of babies immediately following birth and for varying periods during the first few weeks thereafter was taken advantage of at the same time, and the observations on the hearts of the newborn are incorporated in this article.
