The purpose of selecting three prompts for each text type was to neutralize the effect of the type of prompt on the writing skills, since type of writing also affects the quality of writing (Jiuliang, 2014). Writing samples of the students were evaluated against holistic scale (Hughes, 1989) (Supplementary Appendix K) and analytical scale (Jacobs, 1981) (Supplementary Appendix L) by three English teachers.
