The neo-patrimonial model is pertinent here, as it posits that corruption in developing nations is inherently linked to the absence of a tradition of power separation, whereby political authority transforms into a source of personal wealth (Bratton & van de Walle, 1994;Fukuyama, 2014). The study employs social capital as a theoretical framework, wherein citizens engage in trust, cooperation, and participation to oversee government officials and assure accountability (Putnam, 2000;Rothstein & Uslaner, 2005).
