Whereas scholarly studies often elaborate on the design of the method for empirical data collection and analysis, surprisingly, the actual use of design principles taken from the domain of design and engineering of products has not come into the picture, yet; the stance of this paper is that the use of design principles taken from this domain may be beneficial for making choices and detailing research design. The application is demonstrated through showcasing the research design process of a doctoral study. The topic explored in this doctoral study concerns the theoretical concepts of exploration and exploitation, especially focused on their implication in managerial practices of managing innovation. In addition, both theoretical and empirical validity of view exploration and exploitation as a dichotomy was questioned; this was done through challenging the domain assumptions sustaining these notions. In order to tackle this rather complex research problem, the study adopted Pugh’s ‘controlled convergence method’ to have a more systematic approach in setting the final research methods.

Other Quantitative Methods

In addition to meta-analysis, as presented in the previous chapters, more methods for quantitative analysis and syntheses are available. Some of these are extensions of meta-analysis, whereas others are different ways of performing quantitative analysis. Such methods and approaches are quite varied and are used for different purposes. Therefore, this chapter will look at some methods available for quantitative analysis and syntheses other than meta-analysis, and discuss their application.

Combining Quantitative and Qualitative Syntheses

So far, Chapters 7–9 about quantitative analysis and its synthesis, and Chapters 10 and 11 about qualitative analysis and its synthesis have treated both approaches as separate; however, more recently attention has risen towards combining both in systematic reviews and systematic literature reviews. Sections of this book (Section 9.4 about bibliometric analysis and Section 9.5 about systematic quantitative literature reviews) have already referred to combining quantitative and qualitative analysis. The approaches to combining both types of synthesis is a relatively new approach with its own challenges. To this purpose, the chapter will provide guidance for combining quantitative and qualitative analysis in systematic approaches to literature reviews.

Data Management and Repositories for Literature Reviews

The conduct of literature reviews and their outcomes are of interest to many as outlined in the previous chapter; therefore, they should be accessible. In this sense, particularly, systematic reviews have been leading the way. Nowadays, it is more common that data, results and outcomes of research, including literature reviews, are found in the public domain, besides publications in journals so that others can either review the materials of a study or reuse data of research. To this purpose, this chapter will look at data management, how data can be stored in repositories and how outcomes can be disseminated, particularly from the perspective of literature reviews.

Objectives and Positioning of [Systematic] Literature Reviews

When undertaking literature reviews, it is important to know why you have to do these and how. In 2012 a doctoral student told that his supervisor had advised for the literature review: ‘Just do it!’ Whereas this advice holds true to a certain extent, it does not provide a true starting point for appropriate and thorough literature reviews. Better options for starting are to know how literature reviews are embedded in research processes and how they are related to different approaches for the design of research.

... Because in all these cases the simulation is to serve as a mediator for our understanding of reality [59], a central requirement is for it to be credible [60] or trustworthy [44]. This is especially true in intervention-oriented fields [61], like OR, where a post-positivist view requires stakeholder's participation to ensure the simulation impacts practice [62]. ...

... Moving forward, future ICT initiatives for small-scale producers must carefully diagnose localized barriers, priorities, and digital literacy skills to design appropriate solutions (Roberts and Hernandez, 2019). These efforts will benefit tremendously from the sustained involvement of end-users in iterative ICT co-design and evaluation (Akinnuwesi et al., 2013;Koukou and Dekkers, 2024), as well as other relevant stakeholders such as extension services, policymakers, and consumers (Steinke et al., 2019;Alfonsi, 2024). Such participatory approaches can have significant positive outcomes for ICT design and adoption, and reduce digital divides (Chipidza and Leidner, 2019;Ortiz-Crespo et al., 2020). ...

Using multiple databases is beneficial for including relevant studies, preventing relevant studies from missing out on specific databases (Zhou et al., 2023). These three are the most used databases with the coverage of high-impact and peerreviewed journals (Podsakoff et al., 2005). ...

... Research syntheses can encompass descriptive, informative, evaluative, and connective aspects, often undertaken using a narrative, critical or systematic approach (Popay et al., 2006;Luke et al., 2018). Purposeful sampling involves selecting highly relevant and information-rich cases, extracting and describing how information from an article can be used for the purposes of the study at hand (Duan et al., 2015;Dekkers et al., 2022). Examples include choosing highly cited and frequently used publications to ascertain popularly referred to literature, as well as selecting varied cases to document diverse adaptations, and also as an outlier, extreme or less common cases to understand a range of different manifestations of an idea (Duan et al., 2015). ...

... To synthesize and expand the existing knowledge base, this study's research design entails a two-pronged approach to build upon the existing knowledge base. First, a systematic literature search is conducted to uncover relevant scholarly sources, as the rigor of a literature review hinges on the quality of the search process (Dekkers et al., 2022;Snyder, 2019). Second, the retrieved articles are analyzed using predefined criteria to extract the key themes, knowledge gaps, and future research directions. ...

... However, literature searches are (Haraldstad & Christophersen, 2015;Vimal, 2022), computerized and organized (Pisters & Hoffman, 1998), optimal (Bramer et al., 2017) and comprehensive (Hazari, 2023). Moreover, research databases (e.g., Google Scholar, PubMed, ResearchGate, Scopus, and Web of Science, etc.) are multiple, and selecting the best search engines is also part of the challenge of literature searches (Dekkers et al., 2022). In the context of online education research, bibliometric analyses have highlighted its growing complexity, emphasizing the urgent need for tools that can streamline access to high-quality literature (Permadi & Tiarto, 2022). ...
