OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of rhinosporidiosis in various groups of people & to know the various possibilities of extra nasal presentation as well as manifestations, so that the disease can be diagnosed early & proper treatment can be given at an early date. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study. SETTINGS: Tertiary referral center [VSS Medical College, Burla.] MATERIAL & METHODS: For the observation on various presentations of rhinosporidiosis, the patients coming with mass in nose, complaining of nasal obstruction or recurrent epistaxis, & in mass in the other site of the body suspected to suffer from rhinosporidiosis were studied, treated & followed up in the department of ENT, VSS Medical College Hospital, Burla, Sambalpur. All such cases from September 2010 to August 2012 were taken into account. Their detailed history taken & their treatment is followed up. The results obtained are presented. RESULTS: Nose was the most common [MC] site of rhinosporidiosis. In the extranasal presentation nasopharynx is the MC site. Other sites are eye, skin & larynx. Common age group of involvement is 21–30 years. Males are affected more. The disease is prevalent among rural population. Nasal obstruction & epistaxis are the MC presenting symptom in nasal rhinosporidiosis. In nasopharyngeal cases foreign body sensation, stuffiness in ear & speech defect are the presenting symptoms. Ocular cases mostly presented with mass in conjunctiva or foreign body sensation in eye with bloody discharge. CONCLUSION: Atypical presentation of rhinosporidiosis in head and neck region is rare. Very often, this atypical presentation causes dilemma in diagnosis and creates confusion. Diagnosis of rhinosporidiosis should be kept in mind in all granulomatous lesions involving the mucous membranes in the endemic area.

ABSTRACT :-OBJECTIVE : – This case is reported for emphasizing on early dia gnosis in suspicious cases of foreign body lodgement in any age group by detail history taking and relevant radiography, thereby managing early & successfully. Early remova l of foreign body will prevent further complications. STUDY DESIGN: - Retrospective study. SETTING: - VSS Medical College & Hospital, Burla, Sambalpur, Odisha. PATIENT: A 62 year aged male with suspicious osteomyelitis of lower jaw which after CT scanning revealed a lodgement of fo reign body (Tooth Brush) in the right cheek. RESULT: - By performing CT scan the foreign body Tooth Brush was diagnosed in the right masseter muscle. Tooth brush was removed under general anaes thesia by transverse incision over right cheek. CONCLUSION: - A wide range of suspicion of clinician, during and after taking history by the clinician definitely helps in early diagnosis & ear ly intervention to prevent complications. Educating the patient is also equally important.

The significant incidence of atopy associated with otitis media with effusion (OME) has suggested a role of allergy in the pathogenesis of OME. Past studies implicated allergy in the pathogenesis of otitis media [OM]. Otitis media is a common condition, especially in children. Most episodes of OM were associated with an upper res piratory viral infection and are short- lived and self-limiting with or without medical tre atment. However, chronic OM with effusion (OME) has significant sequelae, is refractory to mo st medical treatments, and frequently requires surgical intervention. A large body of epid emiologic and mechanistic evidence supports a role for allergic rhinitis [AR] as a risk for OM. To establish the association of allergic rhinitis with otitis media with effusion 100 childr en of age group 5 to14 were taken, 50 children were suffering from otitis media[test group] & 50 we re healthy[control group]. These children were evaluated clinically & a battery of laboratory tests was performed in all children to establish the prevalence of allergic rhinitis in the m. Out of 50 children with otitis media 12 were suffering from allergic rhinitis & out of 50 health y children 3 were suffering from allergic rhinitis. Chi-square test was performed and the 'P0. 05' value was found to be 0.0127[uncorrected] and was highly significant. The se findings indicate that prevalence of allergic rhinitis is more in persons suffering from OME as compared to healthy individuals

Parapharyngeal space tumours account for some 0.5% of tumours of the head and neck. Most of them are benign. The importance of the se tumours lies mainly in two aspects: on one hand, the difficulty of early diagnosis, due to the lack of symptoms in the initial stages and, on the other, the extreme complications of performin g surgery in the parapharyngeal region. Tumors originating in the parapharyngeal space are rar e and are fascinating to the surgeon in view of the anatomical complexity of the area, varie d histological types and the impressive size which some of these tumors attain before becoming c linically evident. We report a rare case of schwannoma arising from the lingual nerve & presenti ng as a mass in the parapharyngeal space

To evaluate the clinical feature & pathology of atr ophic rhinitis [AR] 75 cases of AR were evaluated retrospectively. Maximum cases were i n the age group 20–30 years [40%]. Male: female ratio was 1:1.5. Major symptoms were fo ul smell from nasal cavity along with crusting. The major signs found were atrophy of late ral nasal wall along with turbinates & nasal crusting. The most common organism found in nasal c avity & antrum were Pseudomonas aeruginosa followed by Klebsiella ozaenae. The present study describes the clinicopathological profile of 75 cases of atrophic rhinitis from 1.1.2011 to 31.12.2012 in the Dept. of ENT VSS Medi cal college Burla-Odisha.

... In their study on nasal rhinosporidiosis, Guru et al. [8] reported the most common involvement of the lateral wall of the nose, followed by the septum and floor. In another study, Karthikeyan et al. [9] found the septum, followed by the inferior turbinate and inferior meatus, as the most common site of attachment. ...
