... Picralima nitida (Stapf) T.Durand & H.Durand is an emblematic Apocynaceae plant native to tropical Africa, which has been studied extensively as a consequence of its widespread traditional use as antimalarial agent. 2 Indeed, from Ivory Coast to Ghana, where the tree is naturally distributed, the seeds are commonly taken in the form of a paste, diluted with water, to treat fevers. Since the first investigations in 1927 by Henry and Sharp, 3 about 20 monoterpene indole alkaloids have been isolated from P. nitida, such as akuammine, akuammigine, akuammicine, and picraline. ...

... Furthermore, the ash of burnt roots mixed with palm oil is applied to scarifications made to treat chest pain and headache ( Mosango, 2007). Apart from its proposed healing properties, the use of Alchornea floribunda as an aphrodisiac with stimulant and intoxicating abilities, under the names niando ( Raymond-Hamet, 1952a, 1952b) or ononn, has a long history in central Africa ( De Wildeman, 1920;RaymondHamet, 1952a;Mesia et al., 2008;Musuyu Muganza et al., 2012). In this instance, De Smet (1996) reported its hallucinogenic potential, while Fernandez (1972) elaborated on its importance in initiation ceremonies (i.e. the roots are sometimes mixed with or used as a substitute for those of Tabernanthe iboga Baill., extracted with water and taken orally; also see Mosango, 2007). ...

In the Amazon region, a polyamine alkaloid N,N'-di-E-cinnamoylspermidine or maytenine was isolated from Maytenus krukovii (Maytenus chuchuhuasha) trees (Celastraceae) [46,54]. Several studies have stimulated the development of synthetic approach to that class of polyamides [46,[55][56][57][58] including the maytenine synthesis [59]. ...

... Cryptolepine is the natural product of indole-quinoline alkaloids, which were isolated in 1929. The exact chemical structure of cryptolepine was assigned in 1951 as a linearly-fused 5-methyl-10H-indolo [3,2-b]quinoline [37]. Cryptolepine has been investigated as a promising anti-malarial and anti-cancer agent [38]. ...

The alkaloids are also reportedly responsible for the hallucinogenic properties of the plant (Raymond-Hamet and Goutarel, 1965), where the root extract exhibits a sympatholytic action and increases the sensitivity of the nervous system to epinephrine (Raymond-Hamet, 1952b) and adrenalin (Raymond-Hamet, 1954) significantly. ...

Hypertension produced by high doses of aqueous extract was attributed to the excitement of the sympathetic nervous system (Raymond-Hamet, 1954). Nisar et al. (2009) isolated two new diterpenoid alkaloids viz. ...
