A prefabricated construction supply chain(PCSC) is a complex network with high interdependency between entities. After disturbance, it is prone to cascading failure, leading to project delays or budget overruns. Therefore, it is necessary to model a robust network against cascading failure to achieve a sustainable prefabricated construction system. This study explores the functional robustness of a prefabricated construction supply chain network (PCSCN) against underload cascading failure. First, the PCSCN is constructed as a three-echelon supply chain network based on complex network theory, which can characterize the general characteristics of PCSC and provide the network foundation for the subsequent numerical simulation research. Then, a more realistic underload cascading failure model that adds the new element of substitute nodes is established to describe load loss propagation in the PCSCN. Finally, the Order Fulfillment Rate(OFR) is used as the robustness index to quantify network robustness from a functional perspective. The numerical simulation results indicate that in the PCSCN, the larger the initial load is, the more important the node, and component manufacturers are more important than building material suppliers. In addition, the node capacity upper bound parameter α has a positive relationship with robustness, the failure coefficient β has a negative relationship, and the edge weight adjustment coefficient θ has no significant impact on robustness. This research can provide guidance for developing cascade control and defense strategies in PCSCN risk management.

Purpose Prefabricated buildings (PBs) have proven to effectively mitigate carbon emissions in the construction industry. Existing studies have analyzed the environmental performance of PBs considering the shift in construction methods, ignoring the emissions abatement effects of the low-carbon practices adopted by participants in the prefabricated building supply chain (PBSC). Thus, it is challenging to exploit the environmental advantages of PBs. To further reveal the carbon reduction potential of PBs and assist participants in making low-carbon practice strategy decisions, this paper constructs a system dynamics (SD) model to explore the performance of PBSC in low-carbon practices. Design/methodology/approach This study adopts the SD approach to integrate the complex dynamic relationship between variables and explicitly considers the environmental and economic impacts of PBSC to explore the carbon emission reduction effects of low-carbon practices by enterprises under environmental policies from the supply chain perspective. Findings Results show that with the advance of prefabrication level, the carbon emissions from production and transportation processes increase, and the total carbon emissions of PBSC show an upward trend. Low-carbon practices of rational transportation route planning and carbon-reduction energy investment can effectively reduce carbon emissions with negative economic impacts on transportation enterprises. The application of sustainable materials in low-carbon practices is both economically and environmentally friendly. In addition, carbon tax does not always promote the implementation of low-carbon practices, and the improvement of enterprises' environmental awareness can further strengthen the effect of low-carbon practices. Originality/value This study dynamically assesses the carbon reduction effects of low-carbon practices in PBSC, informing the low-carbon decision-making of participants in building construction projects and guiding the government to formulate environmental policies.

... However, most existing studies lack consideration of the uncertainty of parameters in commercial building operations, potentially leading to impractical energy savings and emission reduction goals. A growing number of studies have adopted dynamic scenario analysis for energy and operational carbon emission reduction, integrating methods such as the Monte Carlo simulation [38,39], system dynamics method [40,41], dynamic material flow principle [5], etc. Li et al. [12] used the Monte Carlo simulation to investigate potential dynamic carbon emission peaks, incorporating uncertainties in key parameters. Their findings indicated that energy use in commercial buildings significantly contributed to emission growth and most provinces were projected to fall short of meeting their emission peak targets. ...

... Considering the regional imbalance of CO2 emissions in China, accurately and comprehensively understanding the distribution characteristics of CO2 emissions can help the government formulate precise emission reduction policies, which is crucial for differentiated governance and coordinated development between different regions [13][14][15][16][17][18]. In previous studies, people explored the spatial characteristics of China's CO2 emissions using the Kernel density estimation method, Markov chains, standard deviation ellipse, gravity models, etc. [19][20][21][22]. The results have shown that China's CO2 emissions exhibit significant regional differentiation in different regions, with spatial correlations and spillover effects between regions [23]. ...

... Some firms may lack the knowledge and experience to effectively implement lowcarbon technologies, resulting in technical barriers that impede the transition process 4 . Scholars also note that if the market exhibits low sensitivity or demand for low-carbon buildings, construction firms may be reluctant to proceed with the transition, fearing insufficient customer attraction post-transition 21 . Previous studies have concluded that overcoming these obstacles necessitates a collaborative effort between government and business sectors. ...

... This hybrid methodology has been validated in terms of its effectiveness in offering a comprehensive understanding of shipping network resilience. Furthermore, when extending the scope of network resilience analysis to a broader transport domain and comparing with studies carried out in road traffic (Duan et al., 2023;Guo et al., 2023), it is evident that shipping network studies, as presented in Table 1, primarily measure changes in network resilience performance in the event of a disruption (Gu and Liu, 2023). In other words, they show limited research scopes in the response state ( Fig. 1) without considering the ability for recovery. ...

They mostly use cross-sectional or repeated-panel surveys of either self-reported commuting trips in the travel diary 20,21,24,25 or ridership reports 19,26 . Various analysis techniques have been applied, for instance, Tukey's multiple comparison test 24 , ordinal logit regression 20 , Heckman two-step model 20,23 , regression discontinuity design 19 , and difference-in-differences regression 25,26 . ...

... Furthermore, scholars have analyzed the building life cycle and emission reduction measures at various stages in the path to achieving carbon emissions reduction in buildings. Du et al. (2023b) pointed out that reasonable profit distribution based on carbon emission reduction is crucial to promote the implementation of low-carbon initiatives by construction supply chain firms. Zhang et al. (2019) developed the China Building Construction Model (CBCM) based on the production and transportation of building materials and on-site construction processes, indicating that it may be possible to reduce future carbon emissions associated with the building construction sector with the promotion of new low-carbon building structures and the improvement of productivity. ...
