This article fits into the framework of an investigation into the validity of the idealist method in politics. It examines the system of Fichte from this particular viewpoint and notes that the juridico-political philosophy of Fichte is very different from what its author would have wished. Far from being deduced from general metaphysics and therefore imprinted with absolute certainty, this doctrine of the State is elaborated "inductively" in order to meet the immediate requirements of an empirically determined political situation. Thus Fichte ends up with the opposite result to that which he anticipated : it is politics which — logically speaking — takes precedence over metaphysics and makes the latter run the risk of "empiric contaminations". This discord between word and action in a typically idealist manner of proceeding suggests the idea that the a priori deduction of politics is an illusory guarantee because it is in reality impracticable. It stimulates further historic research of the same type and a fundamental criticism of political reason.

The Fichtean « Anstoss » : An attempt to explain a metaphor. The term Anstoss is a metaphor designating the highest condition of consciousness in the Fichtean Grundlage. Usually, the word is used in the sense of « shock » ; the metaphor originates from the problematic of bodily shock. However, the term used by Rational Mechanics is always Stoss, not Anstoss. Thus, Fichte's substitution is significant, for the philosopher was aware of the terminology of the theoreticians of shock ; he did not use the word Anstoss in the sense of « shock ». In fact, the An-stoss is both a primary shock and an absolute movement-generating shock, that is, an « originative impulse ».
