The notion of beneficence, motivated by human compassion and construed as humanitarian solidarity and a moral response to suffering and injustice, has been especially strongly contested (Fassin, 2007;Bornstein and Redfield, 2011;Ticktin, 2016;Chouliaraki, 2019). Over the past decade, social scientists have called for a closer empirical and theoretical examination of the core principles, underlying behaviours, and forms of intervention characterising humanitarian action (see, for example, Kleinman, 2007;Mosse, 2011;Redfield, 2013;Abramowitz and Panter-Brick, 2015;Allen, 2015;Malkki, 2015;Roth, 2015).
