1. The shell of the genus Bythinella varies greatly both in different populations and within the same population. This was certainly the main source of difficulties in its taxonomy: in determining of its species, in its separation from other genera and its classification into higher categories. Namely, its species were often put together or separated; species of other genera were included into it, or the species of this genus were included into others, and the genus was put into various families and subfamilies. On the other hand, such a high potency of variation enabled a great spread of this genus.
