... Our paper discusses ways to make sense of complexities concerning sustainable development as a whole rather than looking at sustainability and development in isolation. It contributes to enriching the sustainable development agenda in HCI [64,81] by (a) cultivating, in Freire's [71] terms, critical consciousness, i.e., "learning to perceive social, political, and economic contradictions, and to take action against the oppressive elements of reality" and (b) offering insights towards unifying SHCI and HCI4D, in line with Light et al. 's recommendation [125] "that [HCI4D] and SHCI are not separable in a world that fully acknowledges the interdependencies of our pluriversal and entangled globe. " We acknowledge the foundational contributions of scholars whose work has paved the way for politically engaged research in HCI [17,56,60,109,148]. ...
