The rapid increase in women's employment opportunities in Indonesia’s tourism sector, particularly in the informal sector, highlights their crucial role in the economic development of tourism villages. This study examines women's participation in the hotel industry and their adaptation and innovation in micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) across Bali, Banyuwangi, Banten, and Jogja. Using participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies, the research finds that women play strategic roles as business managers, tourism drivers, and cultural preservers. However, challenges such as limited capital access and market constraints persist, influenced by resource availability, infrastructure, local culture, and market potential. Despite these barriers, women leverage government and private sector training programs to enhance their skills and overcome obstacles. Strengthening women’s empowerment in tourism villages is essential for sustaining local economic growth and improving community welfare.

International Journal of Research and Innovation in Social Science

This study aims to examine how cultural elements can be a major added value in strengthening the identity of MSME products in the global arena. With a literature study approach, this study analyzed 38 relevant articles obtained through Google Scholar and other academic databases using keywords such as “cultural product design”, “SME product innovation”, “Kansei Engineering”, “ecodesign”, and “design management in MSMEs”. Although many studies have discussed culture-based innovation and design, the main gap found is the lack of integrated guidelines that link the stages of MSME growth with the application of culture-based design principles and sustainable innovation. Therefore, this study proposes an approach based on five stages of MSME development, namely at the initiation stage, information about culture-based product design is needed; at the growth stage, social networks are used to drive product innovation; at the stability stage, Kansei Engineering is adopted to meet the emotional needs of consumers; at the expansion stage, ecodesign principles are applied to increase global competitiveness; and at the maturity stage, MSME actors need to face complex design management challenges while ensuring sustainable innovation to remain relevant in the market. This study offers an integrated way to consolidate research related to culture-based design, while the scope for further research is directed at developing a culture-based strategy model for MSME business sustainability and empirical studies on specific MSME sectors.

This study aims to analyze the internal communication needs that affect Housekeeping operations in a hotel. Pareto analysis is used in this study to find significant causes. Furthermore, Fishbone analysis (cause and effect) is used to systematically visualize and understand cause-and-effect relationships, which helps in identifying critical areas that need improvement. The root problems in the Housekeeping Department were identified, namely (1) Skill and knowledge gaps; (2) Lack of adequate leadership; (3) Generational differences and organizational culture; (4) Lack of advanced training causes employees not to get increased skills, as well as understand the roles and duties of other departments (cross-training) which has an impact on cross-departmental communication. By identifying the root cause analysis, solution steps can be developed, such as increasing the frequency of communication training, implementing cross-training between departments, and preparing effective leadership training for employees. This can be done by compiling a timeline for solutions to handling communication problems. It is recommended that improvements be made to the communication system in the housekeeping department including improving communication technology, developing clearer Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), providing better communication skills training for staff, and improving cross-departmental coordination.

The informal tourism sector plays a vital role in the local economies, particularly in destinations such as Bali. This aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 8, which focuses on promoting decent work and economic growth. These workers, who are often ignored, greatly enrich the experience of tourism but encounter distinct obstacles on a daily basis. Gaining insight into their methods for staying alive is crucial. Informal workers face distinct limits compared to formal sector employees, resulting in less defined sustainability and growth strategies. A thorough investigation was carried out in nine regencies in Bali, utilizing observations and interviews, in order to examine these tactics. This method facilitated a comprehensive comprehension of their day-to-day routines and difficulties. The study identified four crucial survival strategies: implementing prudent financial management to sustain businesses and meet daily needs, utilizing communication skills to maintain income and continuity, enhancing social capital through positive relationships with fellow workers, and comprehending government policies. Out of these factors, effectively managing economic capital is crucial for maintaining livelihoods in the fiercely competitive tourism business. The results of this study provide a basis for future policies or interventions aimed at supporting and enhancing the lives of informal sector workers in tourist areas such as Bali.
