The Internet is, in reality, a heavily used redlight district — so the British Association for the Advancement of Science was told recently. A survey had revealed that half of all searches were aimed at locating pornography. But this is not all it is about. On a more sober note, the Internet — or Information Super Highway — enables a vast number of new copyright works to be created, and to be transmitted throughout the world. The creative effort which provides the basis for investment in the new services will only be worthwhile, and would only be made, if various works and other matter are adequately protected by copyright and related rights in the digital environment.
