Today, information is produced increasingly in electronic form and retrieval of information is provided via web pages. As a result of the rise of the number of web pages, many of them seem to comprise similar contents but different designs. In this respect, presenting information over the web pages according to user expectations and specifi cations is important in terms of effective usage of information. This study provides an insight about web usability studies that are executed for measuring effectiveness of web pages in design and usage sections. It also puts emphasis on the usability study of Hacettepe University, Department of Information Management web page. Seven volunteered users are determined from different levels. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used together for usability study. This usability study consists of three stages. In the fi rst stage, “pre-test” was implemented for determining users’ general computer and Internet skills. In the second stage, “classical usability study” was implemented. Fourteen questions that require the usage of the web page were prepared and directed to users. Clicking number and retrieval time was recorded and think-aloud protocol was also implemented during the study. In the third stage, a fi nal test was implemented to users in order to fi nd out the ideas of users about Hacettepe University, Department of Information Management web page. As a result of the usability study, positive and negative features of the web page were determined by the analyses of qualitative and quantitative data. Finally the results that were elaborated from the analyses have been used for revision that will provide an effective usage of the web page. Günümüzde bilgi giderek daha çok elektronik ortamda üretilmekte ve erişimi de web sayfaları aracılığıyla sağlanmaktadır. Internet’te yer alan web sayfası sayısının artması sonucunda benzer içeriğe sahip ancak farklı tasarımlarla hazırlanan web siteleri ortaya çıkmıştır. Web sitelerinde yer alan bilginin kullanıcı beklenti ve özelliklerine göre tasarlanarak sunulması bu bilginin etkin kullanımı açısından önemlidir. Bu çalışmada, web sayfalarının tasarımında ve kullanımında etkinliğini ölçmek için gerçekleştirilen kullanılabilirlik çalışmaları hakkında bilgi verilmektedir. Ayrıca Hacettepe Üniversitesi Bilgi ve Belge Yönetimi Bölümü web sayfasının kullanılabilirliğini ölçmek üzere yapılan bir araştırma ve sonuçları aktarılmaktadır. Bölüm web sayfası kullanıcısı olan farklı düzeyde yedi gönüllü denek üzerine gerçekleştirilen araştırmada nitel ve nicel yöntemler birlikte kullanılmıştır. Deneklere uygulama öncesi genel durumlarının belirlenmesi için bir ön test uygulanmıştır. Klasik kullanılabilirlik testinin uygulaması aşamasında deneklere bölüm web sayfasının çeşitli bölümlerinin kullanımını gerektiren on dört soru yöneltilmiştir. Soruların yanıtlanması sırasında sesli düşünme tekniği ile elde edilen veriler, tıklama sayıları ve yanıtlama süreleri kaydedilmiştir. Kullanılabilirlik çalışmasının son aşamasında kullanıcılara son test uygulanarak bölüm web sayfası ile ilgili görüşleri alınmıştır. Çalışmanın sonucunda elde edilen nicel ve nitel veriler analiz edilerek web sayfasının kullanımını olumlu ya da olumsuz etkileyen unsurlar belirlenmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlar mevcut web sayfasının etkin kullanımını sağlayacak düzenlemeler için kullanılmıştır

This article studies scholarly communication, ethics and unethical behaviors, especially plagiarism. It defines genres of unethical behaviors, their reasons, influence of internet and ways of prevention. It introduces software programs for prevention of plagiarism. Finally the importance of education and the role of librarians are underlined. Bu makalede bilimsel iletişim ve etik konuları ele alınmakta ve bilimsel alanda görülen etik dışı davranışlar incelenmektedir. Özellikle intihal konusu üzerinde durularak, intihalin ne olduğu, türleri, yapılış nedenleri, internetin intihal üzerine etkisi ve önlenmesi konusunda yapılabilecekler irdelenmektedir. İntihalin önlenmesinde kullanılan yazılımlar tanıtılmaktadır. Sonuç olarak eğitimin önemi ve kütüphanecinin rolü üzerinde durulmaktadır.
