Though only one canine was used, the researchers found that she was able to detect the different variations of otter scat from only being trained on captive otter scat, while successfully ignoring other mammal scat [16]. DeChant et al. [17] studied oil-specific discrimination in detector dogs to determine whether dogs trained on fresh crude oil could successfully discriminate against weathered oils for the purpose of assisting in oil response on shorelines.
