... Despite being shown time and again to be not borne out by historical evidence, the 'civil society' thesis continues to be made. One contemporary version is the collaborative work between the classist G.E.R. Lloyd and the sinologist Nathan Sivin that has lasted from the 1990s right up to the present day (Lloyd 1990(Lloyd , 1996(Lloyd , 2015(Lloyd , 2018Sivin 1995Sivin , 2018Lloyd and Sivin 2002) in their comparison between Greece and ancient China, in which it is argued that ancient China lacked the Greek search for ultimate foundations, the equivalent of Greek natural-philosophical element theories, the concept of nature which is purportedly a Greek 'invention', and so on. According to them, Greece possessed all these developments while China lacked them due, respectively, to the presence and absence of agora debate, hence we call their argument the 'agora debate' thesis. ...
