Вершиною новоєвропейської думки в осмисленні проблем виховання людини без перебільшення можна вважати французьку метафізику XVIII ст. – століття Просвітництва, що по праву вважається «золотим віком» філософської думки. Ядром філософії Просвітництва стає переконання у вирішальній ролі людського знання та розуму для осягнення «природного порядку» в державі, який відповідає дійсним, природним бажанням людини і, в свою чергу, може слугувати взірцем для здійснення соціальних відносин за мірками гармонійної відповідності між закономірностями людської та навколишньої природи. Вважалося, що наявне суспільство за своїми функціями і призначенням виявляє кричущу невідповідність людській природі. Людина створена природою на засадах дивовижної гармонії в умовах природної свободи і рівності, але спотворене суспільство не просто порушує первісну гармонію, а жорстоко руйнує її, приносячи тим самим нещастя і страждання людському «Я» в реальному житті. Поширюється думка про те, що зрушення людства в напрямку від звичайного і бажаного «природного» стану до існуючого, принесло йому значні моральні збитки, відхід до безправності, несправедливості, спотворення «природної» людської природи.
