Lawyers, notaries, and other legal professionals play a vital role in many aspects of housing and home. These professionals are central to the transactions that undergird the housing market. Legal professionals likewise help clients navigate the myriad of legal questions that arise during the lifecycle of a home, including relations with family members, neighbours, and the community. These roles raise questions about transactional efficiency as well as whether unequal access to the legal profession creates structural disadvantages for vulnerable participants in housing markets. This article describes the varied work of legal professionals in housing and home, and outlines the normative debates that this involvement has generated.
