Horticulture and viticulture

Over past years, grapevine adaptability has become of primary concern due to sharp cold-stressing weather of the unstable climates of Southern Russia accompanied by increasing mean annual temperatures, including higher degrees during plant winter dormancy. This situation causes considerable injury to the generative and vegetative organs in bush vine. Physiological and biochemical studies of the vine plant are of great importance for breeding cold-hardy grape genotypes. The article presents research related to studying cold hardiness in different grape varieties by content dynamics of starch, soluble sugars, abscisic acid and potassium ions in plant bark and buds. We studied grape varieties (interspecies hybrids) of the European-American (Dostoinyi, Krasnostop, Vostorg), West-European (Aligote), East-European (Zarif) and European-Amur-American origins (Kristall). The work aimed to analyse the physiological and biochemical properties of various ecological and geographical-origin grapes in winter time in order to identify the cold-hardiest genotypes. The Krasnostop and Vostorg varieties were ascertained as cold-hardy. Physiological and biochemical assays revealed an important contribution of water-soluble sugar-producing starch hydrolysis to low-temperature adaptation in Krasnostop and Vostorg, with the sugar content increasing 2.7-2.9 times. Krasnostop and Zarif were found to elevate the sucrose osmoprotectant winter level 4.7 and 6.6 times, respectively. All grape varieties decreased the abscisic acid content due to protective functions. Aligote was identified susceptible basing on a 2.3-fold potassium ion increase in frozen bark cell extract. The research conducted establishes the diagnostic value of the abovementioned physiological and biochemical parameters for cold hardiness evaluation in grape varieties.

Fruit growing and breeding is an important business and cultural activity to provide healthy food for the population and utilize, maintain and develop landscapes. Global and regional climate change is creating a current need for physiological and biochemical studies on apple resistance to abiotic stress factors. Apple trees’ high potential adaptive capability depending on the landscape was revealed in domestically bred apple tree varieties under conditions of extreme environmental influences, which makes it possible to use them in the breeding process as a source of traits promoting winter hardiness and drought resistance. It was established that the biochemical adaptation of the apple tree varieties to low-temperature stress is achieved by synthesizing the increased number of osmoprotectors (saccharose, proline), anthocyanins, chalcones, phenolcarbonic and abscisic acids, and by the increase in the calcium cation content and peroxidase activity, too. Resistance to high-temperature stress and drought is characterized by a high content of bound water, proline, saccharose and phenolcarbonic acids, a stabler content of total chlorophylls in the period of exposure to stress; the accumulation of carotenoids, and the formation of a xeromorphic leaf plate structure. The apple tree varieties were identified which featured high resistance to the damaging factors of the winter period, which were promising for use in plant breeding and production in the Krasnodar Territory. The results obtained will make a significant contribution to the study and optimization of agricultural landscapes.

The purpose of this work is to study the grapes adaptive resistance to the summer stress factors by physiologo-biochemical parameters, to identify varieties adapted for cultivation in the Anapa-Taman region. The objects of research were following varieties: Krasnostop, Dostoynyi – euro-american origin; Vostorg – amur-american; Zarif – eastern-european; Aligote – western-european, Kristall– euro-amur-american. The grapes adaptive stability was achieved by maintaining a stable ratio of photosynthetic pigments in the leaves during the summer growing season, increasing the content of carotenoids, proline and abscisic acid. The lowest values of the chlorophyll/carotenoid ratio (2.47-2.69) were found in the Zarif variety, the maximum increase in the proline content (8.9 times larger) was observed in the Kristall variety. It is shown that the protective response induction is more expressed in the varieties Dostoynyi, Krasnostop, Crystal, and Vostorg and they proved to be more adaptive in comparison with the Aligote and Zarif varieties in the summer of 2020.

... This is due to the influence of unfavourable abiotic factors of winter, which reduce the productivity of cultivated varieties of this crop [1][2][3][4][5]. In the autumn period, with a decrease in metabolic activity, the protective mechanisms of plants are activated, as mentioned above, there is a decrease in tissue hydration and starch accumulation, followed by its hydrolysis [6], while the amount of sugars in plant tissues increases. Sugars increase the water-retaining capacity of protoplasmic colloids protecting against the formation of intracellular ice and excessive dehydration [7][8][9]. ...

[10,11]. Thus, foliar sprays with a phytomodulator NPC "White Pearl Universal Antifreeze" and a phytocorrector NPC "White Pearl Drip Ca + Mg" significantly reduced the freezing of flowers by 6.3% and 10.4% at temperature conditions of −3.5 • C and −4 • C, respectively, in comparison with the control. Earlier, V.P. Popova and the authors [40] reported the effectiveness of organomineral foliar sprays containing macro-and microelements, a complex of amino acids, with an increase in the adaptive properties of apple trees. Other studies showed that foliar sprays with the "Regalis" growth regulator enhanced resistance to adverse environmental factors in the Krasnodar Territory by increasing the intensity of metabolic processes [41]. ...
