Peers emerge as emotionally present figures in the lives of young adults, capable of protecting them from the challenges that can cause the development of social anxiety. In the context of anxiety, self-control highlights a relevant potential, which is positively correlated with mental health and academic path. The present study aims to understand the role of peer attachment and self-control in the development of social anxiety in young adults in the university context. The sample comprised 407 young adults aged between 18 and 25 (M = 20.90; SD = 2.32). Self-report instruments were used: the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA), the Scale of Anxiety and Avoidance in Performance and Social Interaction Situations (EAESDIS) and the Low Self-Control Scale. This study concludes that alienation from peers plays a positive role in anxiety and avoidance, as does short temper, with risk-taking and egocentricity negatively predicting social anxiety. The results are discussed, considering the importance of peer relationships in young university students’ adaptive processes and mental health.

Bullying is a social phenomenon that involves the repetition of aggressive, intentional and harmful behaviors directed at a specific person. Currently, one in three children is a victim of bullying. The present study aimed to analyze the relationship between the quality of the relationship with teachers, memories of childhood care and bullying in adolescents. The sample consisted of 416 adolescents aged between 12 and 17 years old. Data were collected using a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Cuestionario de Evaluación de la Violencia entre Iguales en la Escuela y en el Ocio, the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment and the Early Memories of Warmth and Safeness Scale. The results demonstrated that bullying behaviors are more often perpetrated by males and with higher levels of aggression in private schools. They also revealed that students who perceive higher levels of support, understanding, trust and openness from teachers tend to be less likely to be targets of bullying. The results also demonstrated a relationship between positive memories of childhood care and students’ perceptions of greater support, understanding, trust and openness from their teachers. An analysis of the results was discussed considering attachment theory due to the implications of memories of primary care and the quality of teacher–student relationships regarding bullying.

Establishing goals for young people in residential care (RC) is a gap in the literature, especially in terms of the relationship between family support and resilience. The literature suggests that RC is associated with the breakdown of family relationships, so the possibility of the family playing a positive role in establishing life goals for young people is reduced. However, family support in the context of organization and stability can be assumed to be a protective factor for the formulation of life goals and contribute to the resilient development of young people. This study aimed to analyze the role of family support in the process of setting goals for young people in RC, as well as to analyze the potential mediating role of resilience in the previous association. The sample included 124 young people aged between 12 and 23 years living in RC. The results point to a positive association between family support (autonomy) and the planning of life goals and verify the total mediating effect of resilience in this association. The results are discussed considering attachment theory and the role of the family in the adaptive development of young people. This study’s findings provide important indications for developing future interventions.

Social support enhances the development of adaptive strategies to cope with difficulties, which may affect psychological well-being. Sleep quality has been highlighted as having a relevant role in psychological well-being. The present study aimed to analyse the role of social support and sleep quality in the psychological well-being of health professionals (nurses and doctors) compared to the general population. The sample comprised 466 adults aged between 18 and 75 (M = 43.4; SD = 10.8), of which 272 were the general population and 194 nurses and doctors. Data were collected through a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and the Psychological Well-Being Manifestation Measure Scale. Nurses presented less balance (also doctors), sociability and happiness than other professionals. Less significant sociability was observed in nurses compared with doctors. The results also allowed us to observe the positive role of social support from significant others on social involvement and sociability and the positive role of the family in self-esteem. Social support from friends played a positive role in all dimensions of psychological well-being. Males had a higher prevalence of psychological well-being. Other professionals and sleep quality show high levels of psychological well-being in all dimensions. Data discussion highlights the role of social support, sleep, and sex and the implications of health professions (nurses and doctors) on psychological well-being.

Residential Treatment for Children & Youth

According to the attachment theory, early experiences with primary caregivers are the foundation of the expectations and beliefs about the self, others, and the world. It becomes particularly relevant in youth living in Residential Care (RC) settings, due to their past adversities. In this context, care workers can provide emotional healing experiences by acting as secure base figures and fostering conditions for youth’s revision of their internal working models. The main aim of the present study was to explore the relationship between youth attachment dimensions and satisfaction with the residential caregiving environment, as well as, to analyze the potential mediator effect of the relationship quality with care workers in RC settings in the prior association. The sample was composed of youth, aged 12 to 18 (M = 15.54; SD = 1.66) living in RC settings in Porto district, Portugal (N = 248), that responded to three self-report measures. Results showed that attachment dimensions were associated with youth satisfaction with their caregiving environment, being this association mediated by the relationship quality with care workers. This study highlights the importance of investing in good relational experiences for youth satisfaction with the RC caregiving environment.

Introduction Adolescents in residential care are more likely to report insecure and especially disorganized attachments, which lead to difficulties in emotion regulation and compromise the quality of their interpersonal relationships. In residential care, it is expected that sensitive and responsive caregivers are able to help adolescents regulate their feelings of distress, enabling them to experience a sense of emotional security. The present study sought to analyze the effects of the quality of attachment on emotion regulation and to test the moderating effect of quality of relationship (from adolescents' and caregivers' perspectives) on this association. Methods The sample involved 306 adolescents, 12–18 years of age, living in residential care and 70 caregivers. Results The findings underscored the importance of the quality of the relationship with residential caregivers on adolescents' emotion regulation competencies over time. The results also showed that the quality of relationship (emotional closeness) as perceived by the caregivers moderated the association between adolescents' attachment avoidance levels and their emotion regulation strategies. Conclusions The results are discussed according to attachment theory, and underscore the role the relationship with caregivers plays in the affective reorganization of adolescents living in residential care.

... Moreover, youths' attachment insecurity hinders the development of positive relationships with potential alternative attachment figures (van IJzendoorn et al. 2020). Few studies in RC examined the impact of youths' attachment representations on the relationship with the professional caregiver defined by the facility as the main caretaker of the youth, that is, the educator (Babo et al. 2023;Costa et al. 2022;Zegers et al. 2006), reporting contrasting findings. In a longitudinal study (Zegers et al. 2006), only youths' secure attachment predicted educators' positive perception of relationships over 10 months. ...

In this context, along with family support, the goal-setting process seems to be influenced by individual and contextual variables, such as sex and length in RC [15,42,43]. Regarding sex, even if the research is ambivalent [42,44], previous studies indicate that young males tend to be more ...

... As a result, they were documented to face additional work stressors such as the risk-as 'frontline workers' (Valtorta, Baldissarri, and Volpato 2022)-of becoming infected, together with uncertainty and a multitude of reactions due to caring for particularly vulnerable groups (Santos, do Rosário Pinheiro, and Rijo 2023;Saglietti and Marino 2022). Astonishingly, however, very little is known about the impact of these conditions on RCC staff (with few exceptions, such as Verheyden et al. 2020;Carvalho et al. 2022;Santos, do Rosário Pinheiro, and Rijo 2023;Saglietti et al. 2024aSaglietti et al. , 2024b, leaving the sector's struggles (and resources) neglected and underrepresented more than ever (Parry, Williams, and Oldfield 2020). ...

Traditionally, the psychosocial wellbeing of adolescents living in RC has been lower than that of their peers in kinship care (Llosada-Gistau et al., 2017, 2019, foster care (Wood & Selwyn, 2017), and leaving care (Dinisman et al., 2013). During lockdown, it was documented to be jeopardized more than ever (Cohen & Bosk, 2020;Crawley et al., 2020;Haffejee & Levine, 2020;Greenberg et al., 2020;Peet & Teh, 2020;Vallejo Slocker et al., 2020;Waide & Partap, 2020;Wong et al., 2020;Montserrat et al., 2021Montserrat et al., , 2022Ruff & Linville, 2021;Costa et al., 2022;Carvalho et al., 2022;Gonzalez-Garcia et al., 2022), due to the many additional stressors of living in RC, such as family visit interruptions, suspensions of exits and therapies, delays in court assessments, and caregivers' massive turnover, to name a few. ...

... A study developed by Mota et al. [43] found negative associations among the length of stay, age of entry into the current household, and extrinsic life aspirations of 296 Portuguese adolescents living in RC. Also, in a study conducted with young people in RC, Mota et al. [50] found that young people who spent more than ten years in RC have the most anxious attachments. On the other hand, Costa et al. [46], in their study carried out in Portugal with young people in RC, pointed out that the length of foster care is significantly correlated with less emotional stress, so other variables, such as cohesion in RC, may be relevant for the adjustment of young people. ...

... In summary, to address the problems above, the present study would use a two-wave 8-month longitudinal design in a sample of 419 adolescents. Previous studies on the adolescents have found that both HWB and EWB tend to fluctuate over a short period of time, such as a day (Fosco et al., 2021;Vandeleur et al., 2009;Wang et al., 2015), a week (Tashjian et al., 2021), and several months (Barendregt et al., 2016;Costa et al., 2020;Efstathopoulou & Bungay, 2021;Galla, 2016;Jia et al., 2021;King & Datu, 2017). Besides, hedonic and eudaimonic motives also tend to fluctuate daily (McMahan et al., 2013;Steger et al., 2008;Toncic & Anic, 2015), over one month (Asano et al., 2021), and over three months (Kinoshita et al., 2021). ...
