Literacy and numeracy development are two important components in education that help individuals acquire the skills of reading, writing, understanding information, as well as abilities in mathematics and understanding numbers. These two skills are the basis for success in various aspects of life, including further education, career, and active participation in society. It is important to create an educational environment that supports literacy and numeracy development. The method for implementing community service activities went through several stages, namely pre-preparation, preparation, implementation and closing. Teachers have a key role in teaching and guiding students to develop these skills. In addition, the integration of literacy and numeracy in various subjects and activities outside the classroom helps link these skills to real life. Thus, developing literacy and numeracy is a continuous process that involves collaboration between schools, families and communities to create individuals who have a strong foundation of skills for success in life. Evaluation of activity implementation and sustainability is planned to involve the Almuslim University Research and Community Service Institute. The evaluation carried out by the community service team is the extent to which coaching and mentoring activities for students have had a good impact.

Boosting the L2 Learners’ Reading Comprehension Capability by Employing Nearpod Media

Objective: This study aimed to enhance L2 learners' reading comprehension by integrating Nearpod media into the teaching strategy at Universitas Almuslim. The main goal was to evaluate the effectiveness of this technology-based learning in boosting L2 reading comprehension. Method: A pre-experimental research design was employed in this study, in which the L2 learners at Universitas Almuslim were grouped without a control group for comparison. Pre-tests and post-tests were conducted using the Nearpod platform to assess the L2 learners' reading comprehension skills. The data acquired from the pre-test and post-test were quantitatively analyzed with SPSS Statistics Output to determine whether or not there was a significant difference when using the Nearpod media in class. Results: The outcomes revealed a significant difference in the L2 reading comprehension when exposed to Nearpod. It showed that the post-test reading comprehension mean score was higher than the pre-test mean score. Thus, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, whereas the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. Novelty: By integrating technology into the classroom, this study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on effective strategies for language learning. The findings emphasize the potential of Nearpod media to engage and empower L2 learners, providing a novel and prospective option for boosting language teaching, particularly in reading comprehension.

Studies in English Language and Education

The purpose of this study is to explain and describe the role of the Merdeka Belajar–Kampu Merdeka (MBKM) or the Independent Learning Program in enhancing the culture and citizenship literacy of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) pre-service teachers at Universitas Almuslim, Indonesia, through the PERMATA-SAKTI Program, a student exchange program. This research employed a mixed method. The respondents of this study were prospective EFL teachers who participated in the program. Five informants were interviewed extensively to collect qualitative data. The interviews were transcribed and the results were analyzed through thematic analysis. A number of 35 pre-service EFL teachers filled in a closed-ended questionnaire to collect quantitative data. These data were analyzed descriptively. The findings of this study indicated that the program could strengthen the cultural and citizenship literacy of EFL pre-service teachers by introducing culture and diversity through the online learning process. The active combined learning process revealed the values of solidarity, tolerance, diversity, and unity. EFL pre-service teachers developed an attitude of mutual respect through a dynamic learning process involving diverse languages, races, ethnicities, religions, and worldviews. This study concluded that the PERMATA-SAKTI Program effectively strengthened the EFL pre-service teachers’ cultural and citizenship literacy.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menghasilkan modul pembelajaran e-learning berbasis learning Management System (LMS) sebagai media interaktif dalam meningkatkan pemahaman materi Complex Engish Grammar. E-learning merupakan modul pembelajaran digital dengan menggunakan Android Hand pone atau laptop sehingga mampu mendukung proses pembelajaran. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan Research and Development Research (R & D) dengan model Four-D (4-D) yaitu Pendefinisian (Define), Perancangan (Design), Pengembangan (Develop) dan Diseminasi (Disseminate). Pengembangan R & D bertujuan untuk menghasilkan produk berupa video pembelajaran grammar dan menguji keefektifan video pembelajaran, mengidentifikasi kebutuhan, mengembangkan produk dan memvalidasi produk menjadi produk baru yang memenuhi kebutuhan, kriteria kualitas, efektivitas dan efesiensi dalam menghasilkan video pembelajaran grammar pada modul digital e-learning berbasis learning management system yang menarik dan kreatif yang dapat meningkatkan pemahaman mahasiswa sesuai dengan zamannya serta meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran grammar. Video pembelajaran grammar dihasilkan dari beberapa langkah, yaitu; process merekam video, membuat dan mengedit video, kemudian prosess menggunggah ke You Tube. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa dapat meningkatkan kemampuan penguasaan grammar mereka dengan menggunakan video pembelajaran.

This study aims to determine the impact of the implementation of learning activity of Independent Learning Independent Campus (MBKM) program on the learning obtained by students at Almuslim University. Specifically, the research objectives were to identify the impact of the implementation of MBKM, to investigate the students’ perceptions and attitudes towards MBKM program. The research of methodology was a qualitative descriptive research. The data of techniques collection were interview and survey, while the data analysis technique used was descriptive analytical by applying formative evaluation research. This research seeks to figure the quality improvement in students’ learning and to find out what actually happened in the natural context when the program was still running, with the goal to boost the quality of the MBKM program in the future. The data provided through questionnaires and interview, data analysis techniques started from data collection which was then analyzed using descriptive analysis. The research results shown that the impact of the implementation of MBKM can improve the soft skills and hard skills of the students after participating in the Independent Learning Independent Campus program. Pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk melatih keterampilan Guru-Guru PAUD dalam meningkatkan kemampuan high order thinking dalam mengmbangkan literasi membaca dalam penggunaan APE melalui learning community menuju caring community. Pengabdian masyarakat ini menggunakan rancangan berbasis Lesson Study yang dilakukan untuk Guru-Guru PAUD di Kabupaten Bireuen. Metode pengambilan data pada pelatihan ini adalah dengan menggunakan observasi, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Ada 3 (Tiga) Tahapan dalam pelatihan ini yaitu: (1) menyusun RPPH yang berbasis lesson study (2) para peserta pelatihan melakukan demonstrasi sesuai dengan RPPH yang telah disusun (3) tahap refleksi dimana para peserta pelatihan setelah melakukan demonstrasi pembelajaran melakukan tahap refleksi. Para peserta pelatihan begitu antusias dalam mengikuti pelatihan dimulai dari hari pertama hingga hari terakhir pelaksanaan kegiatan tentang apa itu lesson study dan mengapa lesson study itu perlu untuk diterapkan dalam pembelajaran Anak Usia Dini.

Program Keluarga Harapan (PKH) adalah program yang memberikan bantuan sosial bersyarat kepada Keluarga Penerima Manfaat (KPM) untuk mempercepat pengentasan kemiskinan. Adanya PKH dapat mengurangi kemiskinan di Indonesia berdasarkan data Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) mengenai jumlah penduduk miskin di Indonesia pada tahun 2021 yaitu sebesar 26,50 juta orang dan menurun 1,05 juta orang dibandingkan dengan kondisi tahun 2020 yang adalah 27,55 juta orang. Penekanan ini tidak lain adalah kontribusi PKH dalam proses graduasi yang dilakukan oleh pendamping PKH, graduasi natural, graduasi sejahtera, dan graduasi mandiri. Tulisan ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus untuk menggali proses atau kegiatan graduasi yang dilakukan pendamping (informan) PKH di komunitas binaannya. Sumber data pendukung adalah sembilan orang yang dipilih dengan teknik purposive sampling. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan wawancara mendalam dan deskripsi dokumentasi. Penelitian ini dilakukan selama enam bulan, terhitung sejak Januari-Juni 2021. Penelitian ini menunjukkan tiga pendekatan yang diterapkan informan dalam melakukan wisuda yaitu pendekatan sosial dengan menumbuhkan rasa empati KPM kepada masyarakat sekitar, pendekatan agama dengan mengembalikan segala sesuatunya berdasarkan hukum agama Islam dan pendekatan hukum dengan sosialisasi sanksi hukum atas pelanggaran yang dilakukan sebagai warga negara Indonesia.

The title of this Service Community Activity is the Training of English through the activity of making handy crafts from nonorganic wastes in elementary school students. The activity was done by given the training to the students to learn English vocabulary through the making of handy crafts from nonorganic wastes such as flower arrangement. The purpose of the training is to help the students in learning various English vocabularies. Through this training the students are expected to be able to mention and remember the English vocabulary related to the activity. For example, the students can pronounce the words such as: flower petals (kelopak bunga), leaves (daun), flower pistil (putik bunga), stalk (tangkai), cut out (menggunting), stringing (merangkai) and etc. This activity was held for one month starting from doing observation, preparing of the proposal, doing the training and ended by preparing the report. The activity and the training was held on January 2022 of the second week. During the training, the students were taught about the English vocabulary while aranging the flowers from the nonorganic waste. After doing the training, the result that can be found that the students were able to mention and pronounce the English vocabulary well and the students also could make and create the handy craft (flowers) from the nonorganic waste. Based on the result of the service community activity to the students of SDN 3 Muara Batu can be concluded that the training was done successfully.

Education is the spearhead in achieving the progress and success of a nation and a State. The state must have a generation that is ready to manifest it. The Educators or teachers are the main keys in creating a discerning nation. There are extraordinary challenges that must be faced by the educators or teachers during the Covid 19 pandemic. However, this is not an obstacle in creating and producing Indonesia's golden generation. Online learning is a solution offered by the Government of Indonesia, where students learn from home and teachers work from home. In this new normal era, teachers are required to teach online. A variety of media platforms can be utilised in this situation, such as Google Classroom Platform; is one of the media that is very suitable for teachers to apply in the teaching and learning process. Through Google Classroom, teachers can provide material, learning videos, and modules, manage student assignments, exams, and check attendance. The advantage of learning online does not make students tired like offline activities, fun, and it can provide new experiences for them.
