This study was designed to explore critical events during adolescence and coping processes as dependent, first, on the relationship with peers, and second, on the type of peer-groups teenagers join. In all, 75 young people, members of four street groups and two religious groups, were given a questionnaire assessing identification with their peers and demographic characteristics, and then interviewed about critical events. The results show that the nature of the group individuals join is of minor importance, whereas the relationship established with peers is crucial: highly identified subjects not only more often join their peers but seem to derive more profit from interactions with people in general, both peers, friends, and parents. The peer-group is important, not to substitute for contacts with the family or other persons, but as a social entity to fill a vacuum during adolescent years.

Social Behaviour

Surveyed 3,744 adolescents (aged 16–18 yrs) about themselves, their peer groups, and 2 other groups (outgroups) to examine social comparison processes. The importance of and difficulty in coping with various developmental tasks were analyzed. High identifiers (HIs), who were highly identified with peers, described themselves and ingroup and outgroup members more positively than low identifiers, suggesting that HIs felt more secure in their groups. HIs also reported fewer problems with developmental tasks and greater support in coping from their peers. Findings suggest the need to shift attention to relationship aspects (e.g., identification with the group) to understand fully the significance of peer groups during adolescence.

... Social identity theory [89,90] proposes that social identity contributes to a person's self-concept and self-esteem. Indeed, strong group identification has been shown to promote identity formation, self-esteem, and the ability to cope with developmental challenges in adolescents [171]. ...

Social Behaviour

... It can be assumed that online social networks are perceived as a possible means to feel socially integrated and to gratify individual's need for belonging [22]. Especially, young individuals may perceive a strong desire to fulfill their need to belong, since they find themselves in an important developmental part of life, in which their respective peer group occupies an important place [30,47,48] and depicts an essential source of experiencing social support [49]. Thus, particularly younger individuals seem to be a vulnerable group that might use social networks in an intense and potentially critical way to gratify their need to be socially connected and accepted. ...
