Proceedings of the Design Society

To indicate the effective team-building activities implemented independently by the students in a project-based learning class in higher education in Japan, we conducted semi-structured interviews with the students of the Design Project class held at a Japanese graduate school in 2020 and 2021. The interviewees are 12 students belonging to the top three teams regarding the evaluation of the final presentation. Based on the classifications of the comments, we indicate the best practices of team-building activities corresponding to the timing and team characteristics.

It is necessary to enhance team performance by unleashing each member's abilities in order to achieve the goal in business collaboration situations. However, it is a problem when each member does not recognize its strengths to demonstrate and the team performance is not enhanced. The purpose of this study is to enhance team performance by making each member able to recognize and unleash its abilities. We propose a method that aims to make individuals understand their situations through an advice sheet from the third person outside the team. In particular, the advice writer gives a description of advice to the team and individuals, based on the pre-survey that individuals answered their role recognition of themselves and team members. The method is evaluated by the change in self-acceptance and acceptance of others. The result indicates that the proposed method improves the acceptance level of examinees with low self-acceptance and acceptance of others at the pre-survey, who are the target of this study. The analysis of the free descriptions identifies that acceptance of others follows after self-acceptance. We also indicate the effects of the advice sheet to change self-acceptance and acceptance of others through the analysis of the interviews with the five examinees.

Assume Step 4 to be Step 1, and repeat this process until sub-goal nodes are completely deconstructed. Step 5: For Strategy node, divide the Goal node on the bottom into Logical responses and Concrete responses. Step 6: Set Goal nodes respectively for Logical responses and Concrete responses.

This study proposes an assurance case description method based on the framework of In-formation Security Management System (ISMS; ISO 27001). The method agrees to information security policies through co-creation of values between a parent company and its merged and acquired subsidiary. Information security policy varies among companies. Parent companies need to agree with their merged or acquired companies on the information security policies. The purpose is to maintain the existing business of the subsidiaries while the parent companies continue to use the current IT infrastructure and network. This study first structuralizes ISO 27001 by using an assurance case. As a result, this study will: 1) Clarify the range of agreement and disagreement between the two companies' information security policies; and 2) show how two companies mutually conclude a final agreement for the entire range using the assurance case created. We also present the quantitatively evaluated results from Goal Structuring Notation (GSN) users' ability to structuralize systems with multiple viewpoints by using GSN. This evaluates the proposed description method. We asked three experts in information security to evaluate the understanding, utility and effectiveness of the proposed assurance case description method. The study participants used the method to create an assurance case.

A Survey on Coaching Methods to Improve Self-talk for Helping Achieve Individual Goals: Using the Three Axes of Self-talk, Self-coaching and Coaching Method

In recent years, there are many studies related to coaching in business. The previous study stated that the relationship between the client and the coach in coaching is premised on being equal, not hierarchical. The previous study states that the coaching performed between superiors and subordinates is highly likely that the prerequisites have not been met. The difficulty of coaching with the coach and the client has become apparent because they feel being controlled by communication techniques. The purpose of this research is to clarify problems about self-coaching methods that improve self-talk on their own in order to solve on their own rather than between the coach and the client. We investigated what previous studies have been conducted on the coaching methods to improve self-talk. Concretely, we have created a matrix with three axes (Self-talk, self-coaching and coaching method or not) to organize previous studies. As a result of analysis, there are two problems found from this research. One is that the self-coaching methods in the previous study do not show the reason why self-talk is caused and how to improve self-talk. The other is that they cannot show how to change self-talk. Finally, this research concludes future research topics.

Previous studies showed that using assurance cases to increase the feasibility of accomplishing management vision and management strategy. The assurance case description method proposed by previous studies, however, does not take into account the work whose purpose changes in the progress. This study proposes an assurance case description method according to the PROCESS definition defined in this study, for being able to visualize that assuring a task whose purpose changes according to the work progress. The reason we refer to ISO 15288:2015 is that PROCESS defined in ISO 15288:2015 considers Purpose, and thus assumes changes in a certain work's purpose in the progress of the work. This study evaluates the effectiveness of both a) being able to understand the purpose of PROCESS and b) being able to visualize that assuring a work whose purpose changes according to the work progress by using both open coding and paired t-test. Based on the paired t-test result, the proposed description method was judged effective compared with current practice, about a) being able to understand the purpose of PROCESS and b) being able to visualize that assuring a work whose purpose changes according to the work progress. Furthermore, from the open coding results, the results suggested why the proposed description method is effective. This study concludes with future research topics.

A Method for Facilitating Strategic Consensus Building among Multiple Stakeholders of Customer: Using the Stakeholder Map

This study aims to shorten the time to reach consensus and increase the success probability of the consensus-building process itself to facilitate decision-making by multiple stakeholders. Further, we create a tool to identify the stakeholders, their power of influence, and product evaluation to explain the product based on stakeholder requirements, while salespeople outside the organization work together with the mobilizer (the stakeholder who brings together the decision-makers) to promote the product inside the organization. We propose a method to strategically judge the approach's efficiency to address the stakeholders using the tool. In particular, we propose the stakeholder map to quantify and complement "product evaluation" and "interviewer's influence." Further, we clarify the effectiveness, efficiency, intelligibility, and operability of the rating scale and the open coding by utilizing the comments of mobilizers regarding the evaluation method. Finally, we conclude that this method promotes consensus building.

... Diversity in terms of skills and cultural backgrounds also plays an important role, as it allows participants to generate innovative solutions with a more varied approach to the problems they face. Therefore, the balance between clear communication, valued diversity, and constraint management becomes key to creating an environment that supports creative thinking and generates more innovative solutions in problem-solving (Oham & Ejike, 2024;Akaki, 2022). ...

... Likewise, as self-acceptance is related to the acceptance of others (Porada et al., 2018). Akaki et al. (2020) concluded that acceptance of others follows self-acceptance, a principle that should be taken into consideration when we have the intention to help individuals to accept others (e.g., at home or at work) for who they are. An individual who accepts others does not judge them, because nobody is perfect, does not try to change others, because every person has his own ideas, and avoids resentment, especially when they are in a superior position. ...

Using the above proposal, the previous study [15] concretely presented the quantitatively evaluated results from designers' ability to structuralize systems with multiple viewpoints by using GSN. Therefore, the research, which the users of assurance cases evaluate the ability to structuralize systems with multiple viewpoints quantitatively using GSN, is progressing. ...
