During the period 1974-1976 a total number of 320 children, between the age of 2-15 yr, were registered at the Speech and Hearing Clinic at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH). These children were evaluated regarding their speech development, associated handicaps, both mental and physical, and also speech defects. Nine types of speech disorders were found, viz. aphasia, defective articulation, non-fluency, stammering, rhinolalia, pubophonia, dysphonia, hysterical aphonia, and delayed speech and language development. Speech and medical therapy was given where possible but the results were rather disheartening because of the poor follow-up.
