Tourism is an enormous industry and still one of the fastest growing industrial sectors. In 1950 about 25 million tourists generated US260 billion. International tourism arrivals are expected to double again between 1991 and the year 2010 (WTO 1992). Countryside pursuits are also booming in popularity. More than 70% of Americans now participate in ‘rural recreation‘ and the participation rate in other OECD countries is only slightly lower (OECD 1994). This combination of interest in travel and the outdoors is causing the ecotourism subsector to grow at twice the average tourism rate (Cater 1994).
