Acromegaly is a rare endocrine syndrome characterized by mesenchymal hyperplasia. Conclusão: Alguns dos resultados encontrados foram compatíveis com os da literatura utilizada; dessa forma, houve a tentativa de traçar um perfil epidemiológico dos pacientes freqüentadores do Serviço de Dermatologia da FMABC em regime ambulatorial.(AU) Purpose: to accomplish a retrospective study about cutaneous malignant melanoma at the ABC area (Brazil), through the analysis of medical reports from patients who suffer from this disease. Methods: twenty medical reports - found at the Dermatology Department of ABC School of Medicine û from 1995 to 2002 were studied, and the data analysed referred to: gender, age, anatomic site, histological type of melanoma, days between the lesions' biopsy and its results, and Breslow's depth classification. Results: the study revealed that women suffer more frommalignant melanoma than men, and a higher incidence was observed in adults. Most tumors were found in patients lower limbs and on their back region. The predominant histological type of malignant melanoma was the superficial spreading one (55,5% of 18 medical records), and 72.2% from 18 biopsies'results took 15 days or less to get ready. According to Breslow's depth classification, the tumor was smaller than 1,0 mm in most patients (69.2% of 13 medical records). Conclusion:some of the results were compatible with another literature; this contributes to the designing of an epidemiological pattern of the patients who are treated at the Dermatology Departmentof ABC School of Medicine (AU)

During pregnancy the patient can break out, to worsen or to improve common skin diseases. However, in this period specific disease of pregnancy exist as the cholestasis of pregnancy, prurigo gestationis, and the pemphigoid gestationis. Some authors propose the term polimorph eruption of the pregnancy to include the specific dermatoses of the pregnancy. The authors make a revision on the main specific and inespecific dermatoses that occur in the gestation.

The population's knowledge regarding the prevention of photoaging and related skin diseases in four cities within the State of São Paulo

Introduction: The fact that excessive sun exposure leads to varying degrees of skin damage and diseases is widely accepted. In terms of prevention, simple measures such as adequate education and the liberal use of sunblock may reduce these phenomena. Objective: To investigate the population's knowledge regarding the prevention of photoaging and related skin diseases. Method: A survey was carried out using a standard form in four cities within the state of São Paulo. Subjects were randomly selected from cancer prevention campaigns or commercial institutions. Results: Out of 947 subjects, 782 consider sun protection important and 607 use sunblock regularly. Most subjects use a 15 solar protection factor (SPF) block; 42 use an SPF higher than 30, 92 use factor 30, 44 use factor 25/20, and 56 use sunblocks with factors between 4 and 10. Only 130 subjects were found to reapply the sunblock after a determined time period and 177 related having already had significant sunburns. Only 15% of subjects associated skin cancer to excessive sun exposure. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that population knowledge regarding the effects of excessive exposure to the sun is insufficient, possibly due to the lack of appropriate information conveyed by both the media and medical institutions. We consider that medical associations should develop and improve national campaigns to inform the general population and even doctors about photobiology and photodermatoses.

Cyclosporine is an immunosuppressive drug with wide clinical use. In this revision article the authors review the pharmacology, contraindications, side-effects, current indications and therapeutic perspectives of cyclosporine in dermatology. Cyclosporine stands out due to the relative absence of myelotoxicity, rare corticosteroid-like effects and its selective antilymphocyte effect, proving to be an effective therapeutic alternative in a great number of inflammatory and non-inflammatory diseases. Psoriasis and atopic dermatitis continue to be the main indications for use of cyclosporine. However, cyclosporine is often opted against probably because of its potentially serious nephro- and cardiotoxicity and the necessity for a rigorous follow-up of the patients. The microemulsion-based formulation of cyclosporine retains the same therapeutic profile but with less side-effects than in the traditional presentation. Uniterms: Cyclosporine, Cyclosporine/therapeutic use. Immunosuppressive Agents.

... Depressive symptoms appear predominantly in early pregnancy and suggest the need for measures of effective and efficient screening during the prenatal period. However, former studies using the CES-D3 or other instruments suggest that the prevalence depressive symptoms increase in the third trimester [34] [35]. This high prevalence of depression converges with the results of the study conducted in Baltimore City with pregnant women, that verified a greater number of women with depression during the third trimester of pregnancy, however it points out that regardless of gestational age, the presence of symptoms was associated with worse QLRH, directly affecting the social, emotional role and mental health [19]. ...
