Samba and pagode are musical practices that deal frequently with the idea of happiness. Through the tambourine beat and other instruments that shape its characteristic sound, the imagination of a certain popular culture evokes in a positive way the lifestyle of popular classes, through a narrative of joy, community meetings and happiness. From a bibliographical research and an analysis of repertory related to what we classify as pagode carioca, a hegemonic samba style that achieved a high cultural circulation in music market since the mid-1990s, we try to understand how this contemporary musical production consolidates the construction and reaffirmation of a "popular" stereotype, linked to the valuation of certain peripheral geographical areas (the hill, the slum suburb) and to a project of happiness of the popular classes.

In undertaking this reappraisal I am indebted to the insights offered by some of the more recent Brazilian scholarship (Alonso Ferreira, 2007;Gonçalves, 2011;Lima, 2017;Morais, 2016;Oliveira, 2015;Palomo Alves, 2010) and to the wealth of new documentary and interview material made available in Zé Octávio Sebadelhe and Luiz Felipe de Lima Peixoto's 1976Movimento Black Rio (2016. ...

... The Brazilian samba is a viable rhythm to be employed as a new dance protocol, because in addition to targeting motor function through its basic steps, which are similar to the tango, it targets sensory and social stimulation through its lively pace and numerous variations in style and music 12 . This rhythm has gained popularity internationally, and it was created and distributed as "the pace of happiness" 13 ; its complexity and quality are direct products of its creation as a collaboration of intellectuals, scholars, and popular musicians. Overall, samba is a rhythm that can be played with a variety of different instruments and serves as a symbol of the joy of its practitioners 14 . ...
