This study examined the construct of the zone of acceptable alternatives proposed by L. S. Gottfredson (see record 1982-03363-001) in her developmental theory of career aspiration. College students (95 men and 151 women) responded to a demographic questionnaire, the Bem Sex-Role Inventory, and the Occupations List. The Occupations List consisted of 155 occupational titles, and subjects were asked to indicate whether they had considered each of the occupations and when. Occupations considered were coded with measurements of sex type and prestige, and 5 indicators were computed for each subject as multiple operational definitions of the zone of acceptable alternatives. Changes in some of the indicators over time were identified. Differences in the indicators were found to be related to gender and sex role orientation of the participants. The results are discussed in terms of their implications for Gottfredson's model and for counseling practice. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)

This study compares the effects of developmental and historical influences on the career aspirations of college women utilizing both longitudinal and cross-sectional data. Data were available from approximately three hundred 1968 college freshmen women (Group 1) queried in 1968 and 1981 and from approximately two hundred fifty 1983 college freshmen women (Group 2) queried in 1983. Both groups of women were drawn from the same midwestern urban university. The groups were similar as freshmen in their educational aspirations, the socioeconomic status of both their career aspirations and the occupational alternatives they considered, as well as the traditionality and Holland type of the occupational alternatives they considered. Group 2 freshmen were similar to Group 1 as adults in life plans (both planned to work more of their lives than Group 1 as freshmen) and in the fact that they aspired to fewer social service and medical service occupations and more occupations in business administration than Group 1 as freshmen. Group 2 was less traditional in career aspirations than Group 1 at either time, aspiring to more occupations in science and math and medical service than Group 1 at either time. In terms of Holland code, the career aspirations of Group 2 are more Realistic and less Artistic than Group 1 at either time. These findings provide evidence of both developmental and historical influences in women's career development.

The Counseling Psychologist

We reviewed events establishing the Women's Committee of the Division of Counseling Psychology (Division 17) of the American Psychological Association. We organized a historical record of our founding, the context surrounding it, and the reasons we believe the Women's Committee was successful. We discuss our disappointment at some unintended consequences of the women's movement of the early 1970s, and indicate issues which concern us and which constitute unfinished work for those who are committed to equality for women.

This study examined the criterion-related validity of the ACT-UNIACT interest inventory which yields both Holland type High Point Codes and World of Work Map (WWM) placements. The scores of 894 college seniors were used in analyses which measured the hit rate (i.e., the match between their UNIACT assignment and their college major). The hit rate for Holland types was found to be significantly higher than the typical average of six category interest inventories. Comparable levels of criterion-related validity were found for the Holland types and the WWM only when the regions adjacent to the appropriate hit region were included for the WWM. To assure adequate validity, users must consider WWM regions adjacent to their assigned region.

... Historically, psychology has purported to be objective and outside of politics yet this is arguable (Albee, 1996;Fox, 1996;Katz, 1985). The evolution of psychology has reflected the political and social zeitgeist of each era (Harmon & Harker, 1989;Lundberg, 2001). For example, in the U.S., priorities of government agencies, corporate donors, and foundations shape the type of psychological research that is conducted and published. ...

... The primary example of this coming together was the formation of the APA Division 17's Committee on Women. Women in Division 17 (Counseling Psychology) organized first the Ad Hoc and then the Committee on Women (Meara & Harmon, 1989). One of the motivations in organizing in 1970 was to increase women's representation in Division 17's structure, as well as in leadership positions in the field itself. ...

... And as Evans (1988: 701) observed, "Validation is ... by the very act of participation, internal to the research in that whilst interpretations must be justifiable in terms of the cited evidence, they are still the product of the ability of the observer to participate meaningfully." In conclusion Harmon (1989) noted that the phenomenological research is rigorous in its own right; however, it contains within it the demand that the researcher be honest and self-aware. ...

... Henderson et al. (1988), sostienen que la influencia del nivel socioeconómico de la familia, como variable relacionada con las decisiones sobre el prestigio de las ocupaciones, es significativa, pero que su influencia es indirecta a través de otros factores, como la habilidad. ... Farmer [18] notes that career aspirations can influence individual achievement and perseverance in a career. Career aspects are often studied in vocational literature [18], [19] but this literature usually focuses on aspirations to choose a career (eg, aspirations to become a scientist or engineer). Recent work by O'Brien and colleagues [20], [21], [22] has examined career aspirations in a slightly different light. ...
