Bayesian Inference tree based on concatenated ITS + LSU dataset. Only branch nodes with both Maximum Likelihood bootstrap support values above 75% and Bayesian posterior probabilities exceeding 0.95 are indicated. Red dots and text represent new taxa, black dots indicate the presence of both ITS and LSU sequences, and white dots signify the presence of only LSU sequences.

Within the genus Mycena, species exhibiting brownish basidiomata present considerable challenges in identification due to similar coloration. This study underscores the significance of pileipellis types and cheilocystidia characteristics as critical in delimiting brownish Mycena species. To clarify the principal taxonomic characters and their utility in distinguishing between brownish Mycena species, a morphological taxonomy and phylogenetic analysis were performed. Five new species from China were introduced and characterized through a comprehensive morphological anatomy and phylogenetic substantiation: M. campanulatihemisphaerica sp. nov., M. digitifurcata sp. nov., M. kunyuensis sp. nov., M. limitis sp. nov., and M. oryzifluens sp. nov. Discussions of these taxa are supplemented with morphological illustrations. The phylogenetic relationships were inferred using Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood methods based on sequences from the internal transcribed spacer and the large subunit regions of nuclear ribosomal RNA. With the addition of these five new species, the worldwide count of brownish Mycena increases to 94, and a key to the 29 known species of brownish Mycena from China is presented.

Phytotaxa

Only two species of Hohenbuehelia, a globally distributed genus, are present in subtropical and tropical areas of China. Here, we describe and illustrate two additional subtropical species of Hohenbuehelia from Guangxi Province. Hohenbuehelia longzhousis can be differentiated from similar Hohenbuehelia species by its large size and its flesh- to pale-flesh-surfaced basidiomata, whereas H. cepistipes can be distinguished by its unique sturdy, thick stipe, an undulating to wavy margin of pileus. On the basis of morphology, the two species are distinct from all other species in the genus, which is a conclusion also strongly supported by the results of a phylogenetic analysis. Images of the original habitats and microstructures of the two new species are presented, and a revised taxonomic key for Chinese Hohenbuehelia is provided.

Tubaria squamata is described as new from Jiaohe county, Jilin province, China. This species is distinctive morphologically because of the small (slightly) hairy or scaly pileus, subelliptic to elliptic non-amyloid basidiospores, subclavate to cylindrical or lageniform cheilocystidia, and a pileipellis as a cutis. Phylogenetic analyses based on internal transcribed spacer sequences with Bayesian Inference analysis (BA) and Maximum Likelihood (ML) showed that T. squamata is different from related species. Illustrations and a complete taxonomic description are also provided, as well as a key to the Tubaria species known from China.

Two species of Xanthagaricus discovered in Hubei Province of China are described based on the macro- and micromorphological features. Their identity is further supported by molecular analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of the ribosomal RNA gene. The phylogeny obtained here showed that one of the Chinese species is nested in an exclusive clade which in combination with its striking morphological features, infers that it represents a new species, named X. ianthinus, while the other species is placed as a member in the X. epipastus clade. Descriptions are accompanied with illustrations of macro- and micromorphological characters and a discussion of related taxa is presented.

Gomphidius albipes, a new species of Gomphidiaceae from the Greater Khingan Mountains, northeastern China, is described using morphological and phylogenetic data. It is morphologically similar to G. maculatus based on the orange pileus and thick gills but can be easily distinguished by the smooth stipe apex. Phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region rDNA data clearly supports G. albipes as a distinct taxon in the genus Gomphidius. The original biotope photographs, illustrations of microscopic characters and a phylogenetic tree of Gomphidius are provided.

A new species, Suillus foetidus, is described based on morphological and molecular evidence. It can be distinguished from other known species of the genus Suillus in having a dry brown pileus, a taupe without ring stipe, decurrent hymenophore which change to greenish blue when exposed and presence of clamp connections. The novelty of S. foetidus is confirmed by molecular evidence from the nucrDNA internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS). Original biotope photographs, line drawings of microscopic structures and a detailed description of sporocarp are provided.

... Species are classified into 44 sections based on a combination of macroscopic and microscopic features. With the development of molecular biology research, the phylogenetic positions of Mycena have become increasingly apparent (Moncalvo et al. 2002;Matheny et al. 2006;Wei et al. 2024). As a part of the subtropical area of China, studies on Mycena have been conducted in Hunan Province. ...
