Cooperative water resources management among the ten African countries that share the world's longest river is leading to greater economic and political integration within the region. Delegates at the Third World Water Forum, held in Kyoto, Japan, during March, heard how the members of the Nile Basin Initiative had prepared a shared vision programme to create an enabling environment for cooperative management and development in the Nile basin through a set of basinwide activities and projects. The Nile river is shared by Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. The seven projects that have been identified, and will cost US$130-m to implement, address the main water-related sectors and crosscutting themes deemed critical by the Nile riparians to ensure an integrated and comprehensive approach to water resources development.
