Controlled hybridization studies were conducted with Tilapia aurea, T. homorum, and T. nilotica to determine which crosses produce all-male offspring, and to assess the fertility of hybrids. The crosses T. homorum ♁ × T. aurea ♀ and T. homorum ♁ ×T. nilotica ♀ produced all-male hybrids; all other inter- and intraspecific crosses produced mixed sexes. Small females produced more fry per gram of parental body weight than large ones. All hybrids were fertile, both among themselves and in backcross.
