A statistically significant positive rectilinear correlation was found between the use of fungicides which contain mercury and the occurrence of leukaemia among the inhabitants of rural areas in the Cracow region (Southern Poland). Higher mercury content was detected in cattle food used by leukaemic farmers, when compared with the healthy ones. A positive correlation was also observed between the contamination of environment with seed dressings containing mercury and a frequency of lymphocytic leukaemia in cattle. In the course of leukaemia, there was a tendency towards a slower excretion of mercury and its accumulation in the organism, e.g.in hair.
