Background and Aims: A recent epidemiological survey suggested that 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT) administration may decrease symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). ... Compared to those who did not see improvements, those who experienced improvements reported a greater intensity of mystical-type experiences and greater spiritual significance and personal meaning of the experience . Similar findings were found for PTSD symptom reduction, with 79% of those with PTSD experiencing improvements, and those who experienced improvements reporting greater spiritual significance and personal meaning of their experience (Cox et al., 2018). ...
... The scientific evidence regarding the psychotherapeutic potential of 5-MeO-DMT is limited to preclinical studies (Szabo, 2015), cross-sectional survey studies of recreational and ceremonial users Davis et al., 2018Davis et al., , 2019Lancelotta & Davis, 2020), and emerging observational studies using a prospective design in the natural environment (Uthaug et al., 2020). For example, preclinical studies have shown potent anti-inflammatory effects of 5-MeO-DMT (Dakic et al., 2017;Szabo, 2015), and cross-sectional survey studies have found reported reductions in depres-sion and anxiety among a sample of people who reported using 5-MeO-DMT in a ceremonial context Sepeda et al., 2019), and that people in the general population report improvement in several mental health conditions postconsumption, including improvements in depression, anxiety, PTSD, and addiction Cox, Moshman, Barsuglia, Lancelotta, & Davis, 2018;Davis et al., 2019). Furthermore, high ratings of personal meaning and spiritual significance, and moderate-to-strong acute mystical effects, associated with 5-MeO-DMT consumption have been reported , and recent prospective studies conducted in the natural environment have shown that 5-MeO-DMT administration is related to a decrease in depression and anxiety, as well as increases in satisfaction with life (Uthaug et al., 2019). ...
