Sticta praetextata (Räsänen) D.D.Awasthi and S. sublimbata (J.Steiner) Swinscow & Krog are reported as new for Japan. S. praetextata was found twice on rocks in the subalpine zone in central Japan, while S. sublimbata was collected mainly from the trunks of deciduous hardwoods in the montane zone in central to western Japan, and also from Sichuan and Yunnan Provinces, as new for China. A detailed description and illustrations are provided for each species based on the Japanese material.

A taxonomic arrangement is presented for the lichens and lichen-allies from Japan accepted by Harada et al. (2004a) in their checklist. The arrangement fundamentally follows Kirk et al. (2001), with some modifications made. In this arrangement, 315 genera belong to 69 families, 15 orders, 4 subclasses of Ascomycetes (Ascomycota), and 3 genera in 3 families, 2 orders of 1 subclass in Basidiomycetes (Basidiomycota). Lecanorales, the largest order in number of genera and species includes 177 genera in 26 families.
