In another study, Laver (1972) demonstrated an association of breathy voice with perceived higher sexuality and sensuality when the speaker was female but not when the speaker producing that breathy quality was male. Other studies have also demonstrated a correlation between certain vocal qualities and perceptions: the more significant the creakiness of a speaker, the higher the perceptions of that speaker's dominance or higher social status; the harsher the voice quality, the lower the perception of prestigious status (Esling, 1978;Scherer, 1979).
