Fatigue Life Prediction of Composite Laminates Based on Progressive Damage Analysis

A three dimensional analysis model is developed on the fatigue life prediction of composite laminates based on a progressive damage analysis. This model consists of stress analysis, fatigue failure analysis and material property degradation. Teserpe’s failure criteria is used to fatigue damage analysis. Fiber tensile/compressive breakage, matrix tensile/compressive cracking, matrix/fiber shear failure and tension/compression delamination are considered in fatigue damage analysis. The methodologies of sudden degradation and gradual degradation are both applied in the material property degradation. The stiffness and strength gradual degradation is based on the Shokrieh fatigue model, which is based on fatigue test for unidirectional laminates. In order to consider the scatter of the material in the practical structures, the stiffness and strength of the material are randomly distributed using normal distribution in the numerical model. The progressive fatigue damage model is developed in finite element code ABAQUS through user subroutine UMAT, which can simulate the fatigue damage process. Fatigue life of different ply stacking sequences and geometries composite laminates under different cycle loading are predicted. The predicted fatigue life is in good agreement with the experimental results.

Long-term strength prediction method is developed based on three theories: accelerated testing methodology (ATM), strain invariant failure theory (SIFT) and progressive damage analysis (PDA). It can predict the strength and damage at a given failure time. Net resin 5228A was experimented by dynamic mechanical analysis and static tensile loading under various temperatures to determine the time-temperature shift factors and master curve of Young's modulus. Unidirectional laminates of CCF300/5228A were tested under different temperatures to calculate the SIFT/ATM critical parameters. Long-term strength of quasi-isotropic composite laminates (QIL) was predicted. Good agreement between numerical results and experiments is observed, which demonstrates the applicability of this method.

A phase shifting technique by varying the incidence angle of parallel beams in a shadow Moire has been demonstrated in the present investigation. Error of phase shifting with this technique is evaluated, since it is not a stringent technique in theory. Furthermore measures in order to increase its accuracy have been suggested. Feasibility of the proposed phase shifting technique has been verified with experiments. It was found that the difference between the recommended and conventional phase shifting techniques could be significantly optimized to be less than 5%.
