Dominican Migration toward Spain: Factors, Evolution and Development. Dominican migration to Spain is a recent phenomenon, which has acquired its main development in the last fifteen years. General factors explain the evolution of the migratory process in both countries, that is, the impulse of emigration in Dominican Republic and immigration in Spain. Specific factors, which combine structural with microsocial elements, are related to the increasing relationships between Spain and Dominican Republic at all the levels (economic, social, cultural, etc.).One can identify two periods in the process of Dominican emigration towards Spain: the first one, with a longer duration, from the beginning of the Dominican Republic in 1844, to the beginning of the 80s in the 20th century) was characterized by a very slight migratory stream, which led to the formation of a colony composed by a reduced number of members, less than a thousand. The second one (from middle of the 80s to the present time) has witnessed an extraordinary increase of migratory stream which gives rise to the creation and consolidation of large colony of more than 50,000 residents in the beginning of 2003.
