Desde sus inicios, este centro de estudios fue dirigido únicamente para los jóvenes franciscanos que aspiraban al sacerdocio, en donde se formaban en las cátedras de teología, filosof ía y artes (Gento Sanz, s.f.). Se sabe que la implementación de este tipo de instituciones educativas durante la colonia fue bastante común en las demás provincias franciscanas de Hispanoamérica, como las de Nueva España y también Lima, San Antonio de los Charcas y Santafé de Bogotá (Richter Fernández-Prada, 1989;Kobayashi, 1996;Barriga Monroy, 2006 Luego, durante la décima sesión celebrada por el definitorio la tarde del miércoles 6 de noviembre de 1675, se discutió la posibilidad de que el padre rector de esta casa de estudios tuviese voz y voto en los capítulos provinciales, ordenando que "el Secretario de este Venerable Difinitorio, propusiese y hiciese sauer al discretorio Capitular, que estaba bastanteme[n]te acauado El Colegio de esta Prov[inci]a, edificado intra muros del Conv[en]to" (AGOFE, 6-2, Leg. 6, Bec. 2, f. 76r; negritas mías). Tres días más tarde, el venerable definitorio emitió su veredicto a favor del rector fray Gaspar de Santa María -el primero que tuvo la institución-, especificando que las instalaciones del colegio se están "acabando para ocuparse con estudios" (AGOFE, 6-2, Leg. 6, Bec. 2, f. 76v-77r). ...
