Uno de los principales retos que enfrentan las avU, principalmente las de Latinoamérica, es el de la preservación de las especies de vida silvestre que habitan en ellas, ante un crecimiento urbano desmedido y sin una correcta planeación (Macgregor-Fors y Ortega-Álvarez, 2013). Además, también están expuestas a eventos que las pueden degradar, alterar y contaminar, siendo los más comunes la introducción de especies exóticas invasoras, el cambio de uso de suelo por infraestructura humana, la contaminación química, la falta de mantenimiento forestal y el nulo ordenamiento territorial (Sorensen et al., 1998;paot, 2010).
