Denture stomatitis nowadays is still a prevalent disease amongst patients wearing removable dentures, irrespective of age. In order to set out clinical approaches to manage this disease there is a need to know exactly which factors are important in the settlement of this condition. Pubmed/MEDLINE, Google Scholar and Cochrane Library searches were conducted using the terms “denture stomatitis” and “denture stomatitis review” and 14 articles published in the last 5 years, throughout a period of 7 months, were selected and included. The collected data proved that denture stomatitis is a multifactorial disease. Major etiological factors associated with this condition have been identified by the authors mainly as poor hygiene habits, overnight use and microbiological colonization of dentures, all of which can be corrected through maintenance, oral hygiene education and disinfection.
