Provides an edition and translation of the two versions of Bernadino Rincio's Silva, a semi-official account of the Bastille festival of 1518 that celebrated an alliance between Francis I of France and Henry VIII of England and the proposed marriage of their infant children. The Silva is a work of literary propaganda, describing, in humanist Latin, the event as magnificent and Francis as a great, even celestial being. He is portrayed as a guarantor of European peace, a monarch with strong ties to the Visconti family (and by extension to Italy), and a prospective emperor. The setting and decor emphasize French splendor in an Italian style.
